So you're telling me you'd have no problem putting your family on an airplane with two guys up front that have known metal health issues???

2 guys with mental health issues? Yes, that's a problem. 2 guys taking the meds? Depends. I mentioned it in the "Pilot Health" forum, but my wife took Wellbutrin for a little while. Not because she was depressed, because she wanted to quit smoking. The simple fact that someone takes these meds is not a direct threat to safety.

You may need to become a FFDO just to protect yourself from the head case sitting next to you from now on.

If your wife isn't a pilot then it's no problem. However, the FAA doesn't differentiate so called off label use of prohibited/regulated meds for airmen.

It's nice to see the FAA begin to come out of the dark ages regarding mental health issues.

Most people suffering from depression are neither suicidal nor untreatable. Those here demonstrating hysterical reactions to this announcement are themselves operating both WITHOUT detailed knowledge on the subject and WITH emotion based stereotyping.

Those who do have treatable depression, demonstrate effective treatment without disqualifying side-effects should be allowed to function in an aircrewmember capacity with close monitoring.

I think the experts are right and the APC hysterics should continue to run around beating themselves over the head while screaming that others are crazy.

There's no emotion and no sterotyping. However with the way doctors currently throw medication at patients just to see what sticks, it poses huge concerns. Different drugs cause different potential side effects. It's the POTENTIAL that concerns me. "If there's any doubt, there is no doubt."

I'm not making a blanket statement that any medication should ground a dude forever, however there needs to be an evaluation period first. I don't know call it 3-6 months? That's really up to someone smarter than me to decide. Let a guy go on head meds, but ground him during that period. If it helps and he exhibits no side effects, then he goes back to flying and stays on meds.

It's the guy that flips out on his meds while behind the controls that concerns me.

Who are these experts you speak of? It's the internet man.

Back to topic, bashing the original mental case... the Milkman. He could have at least given himself a better callsign.
