fy 2011 pilot bonus

If the predictions of a forthcoming airline hiring boom are accurate, it might be wise to start locking up pilots to long term contracts now. That would be out of character, though ... wait for the manning crisis, THEN offer bonuses to keep whomever is left ....

If they had any idea of the perfect storm brewing over the next few years, they would keep the bonus.
-10 year guys reaching their ADSC soon
-FedEx/Legacies/Southwest -- potentially huge hiring coming soon
-Longer deployments
-Reflective belt madness
-Non-Vol 365s
-UAVs
-Fewer cockpits
-Fewer hours
-Ridiculous PME (read: correspondence prior to in-residence)
-More with less
-No bonus (potentially)
-Little to no emphasis on actual flying in the OPR process
-Leadership more worried about BS, than THE MISSION!
-Masters requirement (what's that..I have to get my masters in my off time! That's cool, I didn't enjoy the few hours a night, I had with my wife and kids anyway!)
It will be interesting to see what the next 5-7 years has in store for big-blue....

I find it hilarious that you included that. When I was at the 'died guys were putting glow belts on everything. I saw a picture of a C-17 over by ops-town that some pioneering young airmen had wrapped a string of glow belts around. I still laugh thinking about that.

The bonus is still there but in greatly reduced form. The tempo of deployments for both fixed and rotary wing in the Marines equates to literally one year gone from home for every two years in a squadron. If you are lucky enough to get four years in a squadron, you can plan on spending two of those years in very hot, dusty and dry places; be it 29 Palms or some EAF overseas. At the end of those four years, you get your divorce papers and start looking for wife #2.

The reason for the bonus from an AF perspective is to ensure they have an adequate pilot inventory once the airlines begin hiring. If I were making the case to leadership for approval of a bonus, I would point to the mandatory retirements projected for all the airlines (currently at about 2,000 by 2015) and say we need our pilots under contract to ensure they won't bail at that time. Even though budgets are tight, it's a small price to pay to retain experience that resulted from very expensive training programs.
