How often military pilots fly
#21
Being a Reservist here at Charleston flying the C-17 (and doing nothing else but being a professional Reservist) I've averaged 600 hours a year for the last 4 years. That's with taking as many trips as I could, not saying "no" too often, and two voluntary deployments with the active duty.
In our world, you can fly a ton, or very little. It's all up to what you want to do.

USN strike fighter world rough numbers: 125/year as a stud in training command, 180-225/year in the fleet (not deployed), 275-350/year in the fleet if deployed, especially OEF. 250-300/year as an IP in the fleet training squadron, more if you're a cross-country warrior...
For me, 18 years of flying = 3900 hrs, 3600 PIC
One thing to consider when you compare a "heavy" (ex 70-80hrs/month) pilot - Much of that, especially early in your career, is not PIC. Heavy guys can provide better fidelity...
Good luck.

Come over to the training command and you can easily average 500hrs turbine instructor time a year. Not bad when your bro's from college are struggling for a couple hundred hours of cessna time as a CFI.

I did a two year IP tour in the TA-4J, a four year F14 tour, a two and a half year aggressor tour (F16, A4, F5, F18) and a two and a half year F18 tour amassing 3800 hours. Three hundred of those hours were while in training. Fourteen years total active duty time -- averaging out to 271/year and I'm guessing 1.4-1.6 average per sortie. So, roughly 2500 sorties. Then I spent nine years in the Guard flying F16's amassing an additional 950 hours which averages out to a little over 100/year -- guessing about 600 sorties.

The guard wanted to see my USN logbooks, NATOPS checks and any other qual/checkride paperwork. The only fighter time in my Guard record is Air Guard F16 time -- all USN time was unceremoniously dumped into a catch-all category called "other military time".

I'm thinking we might have had some overlapping years since I had the chance to train with -45 when I was an RP in the early '90s.

You were probably involved with that 4v6 (2 of each type) with my old IP 'Vapes' McGhee being the only one left!
Man....did I get reamed out in that debrief for losing sight!

Like you said - good times and paradise!
