ATP practical
#211
A few guys in my squadron started the process there (paid but hadn't started any training). They overheard the owner talking to the DE and the DE stated that they better know everything and that there would be no slack for living in the military system vs. civilian. Took them a number of months to get their money back. Not saying your experience will be the same, but something to ponder.

I also just finished my ATP with Galvin Flying at Boeing Field in Seattle. It was a great experience, although more expensive than some other programs you may read about on this forum. The lead instructor for our group of 4 AF folks going thru during the last week was a former United Capt who flew for the airline for 28yrs after a stint as a Navy A-4 pilot. We were given personal, focused attention during flights and sims, and they'll ensure you are ready for the check ride. Although Galvin was recently purchased by Landmark Aviation, the flight school will retain the Galvin name and the instructors will remain on board. Let me know if you have questions (FYSA our group consisted of 3x F-16 pilots and one KC-135 pilot--all of us passed our check rides).

At Galvin it was 7-8 days, my bill was 5,300 and that was sim time as well. Total flight time was just under 10 hours including 2.2 for the checkride. It's better if you can schedule their training with other pilots. They will modify the training schedule for your experience level and you get great additional instruction when in the back seat of the DA-42 watching the other student fly.

Well, when they charge 400-something-an-hour for a silly Twinstar, it is going to be that high.
Man, even at ATP it isn't that much for a 10 hour program. So, if you needed the 10 hours, i wouldn't say you overpaid by 3k, maybe only 1k.
Difference: you have it, I don't...yet. I am going to try and do mine in the C-12 with the FSDO. I would rather work the memos than overpay.

If you have good advice on where to go and get an ATP cheaper, please share it for the rest. I did some research on the cheaper ATP schools, one did't call me back and I heard some bad things about the Denver and Phoenix locations. It was also a short drive for me so I saved money on airfare and car rental so it was about the same cost for me as the sub 3k ATP schools. I also didn't have to worry about the plane working and I think the former military and airline instructors were top notch. They did a great job giving us instruction on the differences in civil vs military flying. If you have the money I highly recommend the program, no matter what your background you'll learn something and it will be worth while. This is why I choose this school and recommend it to all my friends.
