Question: My friend is wanting to do the ATP(has the written done). But he hasn't done the military competency to obtain the commercial. Under 61.153(d)(2) it looks like he just needs to meet the requirements to obtain the commercial but doesn't have to actually have one. Can anyone confirm? Will he need to do the Mil Comp written, and get the commercial or will he be able to just do the ATP.

Why doesn't he just do the Mil comp test and be done with it? It's literally a free test that you take to the FSDO and they hand you a commercial ticket. Nothing could be easier.

My DPE was John Phelps (Home Page). The eval was great. Not a 'gimme', but I didn't have to build the shuttle. Know your stuff, and it's a good time. Well thought out and good pace of events. Mr. Phelps was good at 'situational questions' for depth of knowledge and decision making evaluations.

Glad it's over, and I'd use both again in a heart beat knowing what I know now.

The DPE's in the area are booking up so, don't wait too long.

+1 for both Rob and John Phelps. Rob did my MEI prep and is a great instructor. I also taught at Curtis Eads and used John for my ME/ATP students; excellent and fair DPE.

The DPE's in all areas will likely book up as folks "grandfathered" under the old rules try to finish up before their written expires after 24 months.

I did my ATP a couple months ago without having my commercial done. I was the first one my examiner had seen like this but the examiner had no problems with it and was fully aware of how to handle the paperwork.

I would recommend having the mil comp thing knocked out, but it is absolutely not required prior to getting your ATP.

Is the only difference that he wouldn't have "Commercial Privileges: Airplane Single Engine Land"?

He has a lot of stuff going on between now and June when his ATP written test expires. He just wants to schedule the ATP and be done with it and then do the Mil Comp Commercial later since he doesn't have a 2 month time constraint on it.

My license says, "Airline Transport Pilot" then "Airplane Multi Engine Land" and then "Private Privileges, Airplane Single Engine Land" because I had my private previously.

Life and work got in the way and I ended up not having time to get my commercial and CFI mil equivalency tests done before hand like I had planned. I decided that the ATP was a big deal and not something you even want to come close to failing so I focused on that.

Don't sweat the other stuff. I would recommend focusing on killing it during your ATP training and check ride and then knock out the two mil comp tests as able before you hit submit on airline apps.

Thanks for the help! I think that is what he is trying to do. He doesn't have any civilian flying experience so I am kinda walking him through the paperwork process, but everyone I helped(and myself) had the commercial multi, instrument. Just was confused on the reg wording on if that was were they were talking about Air Force experience counting. He will be doing the commercial mil comp afterwards.
