Default USAF Reserve?

Hello all.

In addition to considering the airlines, I've been interested in the military for a long time and am looking into the Air Force Reserve. I am contemplating enlisting while I finish college (about two years left to go) and work on my PPL. Would enlisting provide an advantage with attaining a UPT slot? Is this an advisable path?

Thanks in advance to any respondees.

There's no point in enlisting unless you need the money or really want to be a FE/boom/load for a while...it will only delay your graduation while a stream of well-qualified college grads snap-up your Squadron's UPT slots. AFRC needs off-the-street applicants, the well is drying up and we're not sure why--kids that would never even get interviews 15 years ago are now getting slots.

And those kids are making our jobs tougher at UPT. Lots of time expended on multiple CAP/SMS and scheduling nightmares to try to either get these folks wings or get them out without lawyer involvement in the post CR process.

Cosmic,

Help me understand this, please. Is it not the case of failure to perform to syllabus standards = FEB (or whatever the student equivalent is); FEB determines further training or dismissal? Seems cut & dried. Can one really file a hurt feelings report, lawyer up, and get back into training these days??

Oh come on, don't be so hard on the generation of entitlement. The things they do, whining, making up excuses for sucking I would never even thought about doing back in UPT. But then again, that was before PC took a hold of the generation of wimps....everyone must get a trophy, wouldn't want the little wimps to experience failure and maybe grow as a person because of that. It would be to difficult for the little wimps this society has created.

The process is called CR (Commander's Review) for a failed -89 or EC (Elimination Check) which comes after a couple failed -88 or PC's (Progress Checks) and several -87 rides (extra training.) Given enough bananas, almost anyone can learn to fly...Unfortunately, when the bananas run out, little monkeys go lawyer up or worse...the Congressional route.

Happens ALL the time.

With the total threat of losing my internet identity I am the SJA for a USAFR unit directly tied to UPT. Failure in training is now an admin process or congressional issues are what they are what is the fear of "lawyer involvement"? Those are usually fixed in 3 phone calls.

I wouldn't bother enlisting. The only reason I did it was to have the ANG pay for my college education. Since you are already halfway through college, if you can afford it, I'd advise you get your PPL without the enlistment. As blastoff said, both the ANG and the AFRC are desperate for candidates, so I'd roll the dice as a street hire.

You don't even have to a unit before you head to UPT now

Unsponsored pilot applicants have better opportunity to join Reserve
