They generally won't put you on duty at the FBO unless you have a good jet and full crew. There's a QOL item in the contract called "standby" time. For example, if you're at the FBO and find a grounding writeup on the jet then standby time starts 1 hour later. 3 hours after that if you're not either at the hotel on duty or at the terminal waiting for a airline, or on ground trans then you start making overtime. This was negotiated in a previous contract so they can't keep you sitting around the FBO when there's no chance you can fly. Company gets 3 hours per day standby time for free. Also, they can't "double crew" an aircraft except for the time it takes to swap out crews.

Basically here's the types of duty you can have at NetJets:

Flight Duty: either an active trip or ferry; or "Hot Spare"-standard fuel load on board and ready to depart in 30 min; "Tentative"-same as Hot Spare except you don't fuel until a trip comes up and you have 45 min to depart. Rarely they have you on duty at the jet to perform data base updates.

Hotel Duty/Reserve: already described above. A new thing is "R2" hotel duty. This just started this month as a QOL improvement. "R2" duty at the hotel is when they're keeping you on duty at the hotel because they don't have a plan for the next day yet. They can't shut you down without a next day's brief. On R2 you have no obligation for flight duty, you're done for the day. When the next day brief arrives you're shutdown and rest starts.

Also, at NetJets once you're in rest you can turn the phone off or mute it. If you happen to see a new brief come in it's up to you whether to acknowledge it or not. Just reading the new brief is not acknowledgment. The vast majority of pilots will not acknowledge a new brief with an earlier show time.

Travel Duty: Max showtime for an airline is 2 hours prior to dept, min is 1 hour; Rental Car-limited to 150 miles/3 hours and you can decline based on unfamiliarity with the route or any other safety related reason. You can also waive the 150 if you prefer to drive. You have 30 minutes duty at either end of a rental for pickup/dropoff.

Another recent QOL improvement is any shows prior to 0400 are limited to 10 hours of duty.

I didn't mind the constantly changing schedules. Most of us have even had inflight diversions on ferry legs to recover a trip somewhere.

And we have very good fatigue language. You can call in fatigued and they can not complain about you doing it (at least not where you can hear them :p ) You get a min of 14 hours off, and can ask for more, i.e. if the 14 would put you back on duty at 0300. I routinely asked for more time so my show would be later in the morning so I could wake up at my normal time.

For those reading this thread who are thinking about applying to NetJets: If you're after Turbine PIC time this is NOT the place to be. We're just now having some 2006 hires making Captain in the Phenom 300. And because we have roughly a 65%/35% ratio of PIC's to SIC's even those new Captains will spend half or more of their hours in the right seat logging SIC time but with Captain's pay.

But if you're OK with SIC for a long time it's not a bad place to be, especially if you have a family. The week on/ week off allows you to plan events months ahead of time. Twice a year the week on/off can be adjusted for ground school so you might have 4 days off, 7 on for school, then 10 days off. After that you're back on your 7/7 schedule. And on the 7/7 when you get a week of vacation that equals 21 days in a row off. And you'll have lots of airline miles and hotel points to use on vacation. Five years ago the wife and I went to the Hilton Waikoloa on the Big Island for one week, we flew out on Delta in 1st Class and paid for both with points/miles.

Benefits are good, especially the medical insurance. 401k has a 53% match by the company. In my case I'm over 50 so I can put $24,500 in my 401k, the company will contribute $12,985. A young new hire who can afford to put the max $18,500 in will get a $9805 match for a total of $28,305 per year. And the match goes up to 54% in 2019 and 55% in 2020.

Sorry for the long winded post. Back in 2005 I was agonizing over whether to apply at NetJets or not and I got a lot of good info off boards like this one. Plus I've been out on medical for 13 months now and I'm bored ****less :p

No, somebody asked if anybody at NJ was happy. I told them they are in the minority. That is a FACT. Not hatin, just Detective Joe Friday...

I think most pretend to be happy just so the can argue against reality. It is fascinating really...

Bruno I left after 18 years and my ONLY regret is that I didn't leave sooner. I haven't been there for a couple of years so I can't speak personally for what it's like now, but I can tell you that the number of calls I'm receiving from senior Captains who I thought would never leave telling me that they have to get out has really picked up recently. I don't know what your qualifications are, but if you have options think long and hard.

Correct. The days are filled unless you are shifting late to early or early to late... that’s where short days and/or long overnights occur. 22+ hours at times can and does occur.

Usually, it’s 12 on, 13 off. 10 hours off happens. 14 hours on happens. It all averages and every minute of duty is coded somehow.

Today is 3 hours of hotel duty, then flying later... I walked the SAN Pier and had a great breakfast on duty in plain clothes. Later... two legs on the west coast.

Maybe a third of they need us somewhere.

The days are manageable if you know how to communicate with crew and company. There’s busy days and not so busy days.... it depends on your fleet and what it can do to recover the schedule if the train comes off the rails.

You’re always in control of what your day will entail ultimately. You just don’t know what will happen... but neither does scheduling.

That’s the magic of it all that one must accept or reject ultimately.

I enjoy the variety personally.

One of the multiple reasons I left for Fedex a couple of months ago was because of idiots like **** who will never allow NJ to become a better place to work with all the sucking up they do. After 15 years, it simply became unbearable/unsustainable. They think it all great, portray in this boards that all is great, when it most definitely is not. What he states above is most definitely not the norm, especially in the Phenom. 11-13 hour days, 3-5 legs a day, 11-12 hours of rest is the norm. Columbus constantly watching what you are doing trying to screw you at every corner is the norm. I used to come home exhausted, even after 1 or 2 fatigues a tour. It is very refreshing being treated like an adult!! one leg into MEM, one leg out. EASY. No pax to deal with. Unfortunately NJ still has many suck ups like Lieber, who will step over anyone to get ahead. The mass exodus has just begun, and the people left behind will have to work even harder. I still have many dear friends at NJ, and wish only the best for them, and can say many that had not considered leaving, many senior Captains, are looking to bail, not just FO's anymore. NJ might become a great place to work, but it is going to take a lot of money to properly crew the airplanes and retain people, money I do not think BH is willing to pay.
