Default Dr. Peter Lambrou, Pittsburgh

Bottom line up front, this is a rant...

My daughter, a college student, went to the above-named office to get her Class II renewed. She is in good health, and required no special tests, nor an EKG. Imagine my surprise when I got the credit card bill for $250.00.

I'm not from Pittsburgh; I live--and spent my career--in Northern Virginia. A Class II physical here costs about $125.00.

I called the office to suggest there had been a mistake on the bill, but was told that is their fee for all Class I, II, and III physicals. "Exorbitant" and "gouge" were some of the words I used in response, as well as "rebate." In subsequent phone calls with his staff, I was told that I should have asked the price before using their office, and that no refund would be forthcoming. Sucker.

I understand that Dr. Lambrou is an experienced and capable AME. It is said that if you have a complicated medical situation that jeopardizes your flying status, he is the man to see, as he has had great success in getting people through.

Please consider what I have written here, and choose wisely when you select an AME in the Pittsburgh area.

It’s going to go higher as the FAA pushes out AMEs who are also pilots who provided the service essentially for the aviation community they were a member of.

I sat there listening to the (non pilot) AME yelling loud enough from the front of the clinic that these examinations should be $400. Another good reason for single payer.

Dr. Lambrou is worth every penny.

OP should have done paid attention before the visit, not after.

I'd pay $250 for a guy with a good reputation, vice taking my chances with the yellow pages.

Dr. Lambrou's reputation is mixed. He has had personal trouble with the FAA and lost his pilot's certificate at one time. I don't know his pilot status at this time. He is a former US Airways pilot and also had trouble with the company, but I don't know the details. He is not my ME.

On the medical side, he is expensive but top notch. He specialty is difficult recertifications. He is particularly good with cardiac recertification. He has a well known group of cardiac experts he works with that the FAA trusts. His reapplication paperwork and procedures are absolutely top notch and he understands the people and process of recertification. He answers all the questions the FAA would ask before they ask them. He would be my go-to guy for a questionable recertification if I didn't have union representation, ie. ALPA or APA aero-medical. I have also had good luck with Harvey Watt's Aero-Med guys. They gave me good tips on timing on cataract surgery.

In the Pittsburgh area I would recommend Dr. F.N. Parent, in Monongahela, PA. Very easy to get an appointment and easy to work with.
