You know the funny thing about that? We have friends who have traveled the world almost effortlessly using buddy passes. And yet at times using D1 vacation passes we have ended up just driving
I will say that non-reving for purposes other than work has become more and more difficult after AA introduced the basic economy fare. We even just purchase tickets on JetBlue to some places because the tickets are extremely reasonable and the service is on par with mainline.

When listing for a flight it’s all about when you check in, where as some regionals it’s about seniority. D1 is vacation passes, top priority. D2 is employees and their registered people (spouse, kids, etc), D3 is buddy passes. If you’re looking for the jumpseat tho you could be bumped if you’re not on your metal and they are. Example you’re trying to jumpseat an envoy flight and an envoy pilot shows up last minute, their jumpseat.
I believe the contract carriers get listed as AAC which is lower than a D3. Someone can correct me if I’m wrong.
