That's exactly what my class was told and it does make sense taking into consideration all the sim needs. PDT can afford people forgetting flows, callouts etc. while waiting for the sim since they have AQP. PSA doesn't (from what I was told it'll be January or February of 2018 - 1 year implementation schedule) so the washout rate if you had to sit at home for a month waiting for a sim would be much higher.

It wasn't so long ago that it took someone 6 months to get to IOE due to the backlog in training. Pilots being paid to sit at home for weeks and months waiting for oral exams, simulators, and having to attend refresher training due to the wait. The hiring slow down to eliminate the backlog contributed to the hiring lull and I suspect that is a fresh wound that won't be repeated.
It seems they were better prepared for this hiring wave and may be willing to modulate the inflow to prevent a repeat of the past.

There is no "throttled" hiring. The next class is supposed to have about 30 in it, according to the ground instructors.
50 per month is a "sweet spot". That allows growth of about 15-20 per month. That is responsible growth.
We have plenty of instructors (ground and sim) and plenty of LCAs. The number of sims is limited (currently at 6). It is likely that we will be getting sim #7 soon, and #8 sometime early next year.
For a company with 150 airplanes and continual hiring/attrition, 8 sims is a good number.

They are almost finished installing an E-145 sim where the dash sim used to be.

Ive been 2 -leg commuting to DAY for about 8 months. Its not been that bad. Waaaay better than reserve. Im able to mostly swap into commutable trips with the occasional day before or stay a day after. Its really been a non issue, especially since we get the $250 commuter hotels. Ive only ever gone over the 250 once, and that was my fault. I needed very specific days off and I had to bite the bullet with non commutable trips. The other side of that coin was I had 18 days off that month.
