Luggage and Flight Cases: Discuss
#1
As you might know, I begin class at CHQ on Wednesday the 28th. I've been looking at Rollaboards and Flight Cases. I'm not sure what to get. The PNT bags have been recommended, especially the 737 bag, but they are pretty expensive. The TravelPro stuff is more affordable, but some people say it is crap while others seem to like it. Apparently, Costco has one that they'll replace as often as you break it, but you have to be a member at Costco.
As far as flight cases go, I've also heard about lots of different ones. The obvious problem to consider is when you attach it to your luggage and wheel it all over the terminal, the weight of the case on the handle would cause it to break. Some people have said that the Office Depot case would work until you get the year 2 pay raise. I don't know if I'd want to buy one, only to have to buy one again at a not so distant future date.
What are your stories? What do you guys and girls carry? Suggestions for low prices and good warranties would be greatly appreciated!

I would say just buy the PNT bag and be done with it. I had a travel pro and it lasted 1 year, its worth the extra money on the PNT, that thing will last forever. As for a flight case, I bought the luggage works case. 2 years later it is still going strong. cost around $80 and holds up well.

Buy the PNT rollaboard...its pricey but you get what you pay for, especially if you are going to be commuting. That thing is a TANK. Avoid TravelPro like the plague; that **** is business traveler/FA luggage and it won't last...
I have the PNT split-top flight case. Its a good bag and fits a TON of stuff, but I almost wish I'd spent the extra $$$ for the nicer PNT bag because the split-top bag is a little tall in the CRJ (rubs CB panel when opening). Scott is the PNT of flight cases. Once again, you get what you pay for.

How long do you plan on being a pilot? The PNT will last forever, and when it does wear out later in the century, you send it back and they refurb it for a modest fee. You can replace the wheels yourself (roller-skate wheels), unlike most other suitcases.
Anything cheaper will cost more in hassle factor...you will have to take it to the shop once or twice a year, they won't be able to fix it before your next trip, so you'll need a backup unit too.
If you're really strapped I'd get a cheap flight case and spend the dough on the PNT.

I have had my Costco bag for 10 years and it has never needed replacement, but they will replace it for free if it does. Granted, I haven't been an airline pilot all that time, but it has sure had its share of use, and it has held up great. It's around $100, which is way less than anything else on the market with the same quality. Plus, if you live anywhere near a Costco, the membership is worth its cost 100X with all you will save by shopping there.

Ok, so the PNT bag is the way to go. I've been told the 737 bag is the one to get because you won't miss that extra inch of width, and it will ALWAYS fit in the airplane, regardless of which one you are on. The Harbor Freight Tools case is a new one to me. I hadn't heard it suggested yet. Seems like it would be durable because of the aluminum casing. I also have seen the Scott cases. I like them. I just don't know about the cost up front. Do they have a decent warranty?
I think I'll probably buy the PNT bag, and I'll skimp on the flight case at first.
