Ok JFK is by no means the "heyday" of pilot bases. Jamaica is a shooting gallery. Kew is definitely the place to be. Its by no means shangri-la but it will keep you for the most part from a sucking chest wound. The only reason to venture into Jamaica/Ozone Park is to hand with the usual airline crowd at the Q Club.

I am from the NYC metro area and have family in NYC I know Jamiaca is the only real bad place...I know Forest Hills is nice Far Rockaway Beach is nice good atmosphere kind of a break from city life. You can also try Long Island. Hope that helps congrats on the job
Is Kew Gardens about as close as you would get to JFK for the Safety Factor??
anyone know anything about these neighborhoods:
Jamaica
Briarwood
Richmond Hill
South Jamaica
Rosedale
Brookville
Laurelton
Obviously I chose these because of their close proximety to JFK, most of what I have heard is the Kew Gardens area is the place to be

Kew Gardens is the place to be for a cheap chrashpad, but if you are looking for a place to move too then don't limit your possibilities. In 1.5 hours drive you can be pretty far away from the less appealing parts of Queens.
Check out SW Connecticut, New Jersey, and even Westchester County.

If you don't have a car, forget about Long Beach or towns out on the Island. Technically, Jamaica, Kew Gardens, and all the other places named here are on Long Island. Nassau County requires a car but it is a whole different world from city life.
Question....Are there crash pads for F/A's? Do pilots and F/A's use the same crash pads?

Although they do share the same crashpads, it's very rare if for no other reason than when you complain about going missed into DCA because some one else took to long to cross a run way and the controller ran you to tight to start with, they have a clue of what you are talking about. There is a rumor of pilot that had all of the female flight attendants in his crash pad. Just urban legend, though ...
