Passenger Planes Sit Idle Because No Pilots Want To Fly Them.

Does this mean that "airline pilots" can say what they want but non-airline pilots must be "respectful and play somewhat nice" ? I realize that there are qualifing criteria to be in on the discussion, however, there are many points of view to be considered. We all have a lot to learn and much to give.
As an "AVIATION PROFESSIONAL" I like to think I have something to donate.
I try to be respectful but "playing somewhat nice" confuses me.
For those who read my previous post: "I am not ELLEN !"

Ftroop,
I don't think it's a threat. I think the same holds true to ANY poster of these forums. If you post in a manner that is respectful you're not going to have any issues. But if you post in a manner that is disruptive to the boards as a whole (regardless of your background in or out of aviation), you're going to have admin/moderator action taken against you...
I've seen airline pilots get the boot too...

She is not in aviation and I wonder what her motivation is. She's a Vermiculturalist who enjoys giving advice to current and potential aviation pilots, why? She has no problem preaching about our careers but when I made a statement about hers she goes "Nutz?" You must be able to receive before you can dish!

No, I have no problem with anyone in aviation "contributing" to this form.

JetJock,
I think the Vermiculturalist statement was a joke ..
Ellen,
Nice opinion piece, but a little dramatic in places. I enjoyed reading it. It does bring a few issues to the front. Unfortunately, the public will still keep flying as long as the price is right. The line needs to be drawn by pilots during contract negotiations. With so many pilots just viewing the regional jobs as stepping stones, they're less likely to make a stand.

"I believe this is an implied threat from a "forum official" and is inappropriate"
Call it what you wish. I didn't mean it as a threat but it's something I know has happened in the past. My post was directly related to someone making a comment about whether posters are pro-pilots and if they have the right to post if their not.
I'm here to tell yeah, as long as it's respectful they do have the right to post.
Playing nice at these forums means being respectful towards each other. Ya'll should know that's how it is. No threats needed.

Humor time.
If a Vermiculturalist raises worms, and a herpetologist raises snakes, what do you call the Capt of a plane full of snakes ?
Anyone seen the movie ?

Whether Ellen's an airline pilot or not, the article is pretty well done. The references to GA make me think it might be AOPA or something like that. I'll keep my eyes open for it. Ellen's quick link to the ATP reduced mins page at Skywest make me think she (he) [it] knows a bit what they are talkin' about, or knows somebody who does. You can argue about the word "hired" all day long. It's a minor point but pulling up the ATP page shows some knowledge of what's going on in the biz.
If you want to debate the article, Skywest reduced mins, or the price of tea in China, it looks better if it's all done respectfully and without the name calling.
And JetJock, if you're gonna apologise in bold, don't tell Ellen to "grow up" in the next paragraph. It doesn't make you look very sincere.

However, some think that whatever my occupation is, (airline pilot, HR, stockbroker, analyst, Flight School Owner, farmer, Suzy home-maker, etc.) determines the credibility or validity of the things I have to say. It's like saying 2+2=4, but since I'm not a mathmatician (that cannot be correct.) That doesn't always mean that the things I say are concrete. I am expressing my viewpoint based on the best information out in the marketplace, I try to put it together in a simplified cohesive dialogue to help spur discussion and thought among everyone.

I too agree that a pilot shortage is coming and may already be here. I am not sure this will result in higher pay. I am concerned that qualifications will continue to drop until the airlines will train you from day one. (Hmmm MESA?) Will change come after a high profile accident?
This seems to be the way our govt and industry work. Here's the deal though. Flying is easier than ever today. (Skyhigh, feel free to chime in anytime now) It no longer takes any great skill or experience to stay out of the trees. And, there is a history of experience, not saving the day. VERY experienced crews have been involved in senseless accidents, Delta DFW and AA in South America come to mind. Does experience really mean safety? I believe so but accidents like the two mentioned above speak differently.
So, will the fortunes of pilots change if and when there is a high profile accident? I doubt it. The bottom line will be the determinant factor. When it becomes cheaper to pay more to pilots than it is to cancel flights, pilots will get a raise. Hopefully that day is coming fast.
