Like I said, not a big deal but a heads up would have been appreciated.

I've witnessed a lot more autopilot usage at inappropriate times than the other way around.

Don’t all 121 carriers prohibit spinning bugs and selectors when hand flying?

Obviously a cool pilot doesn't have to follow the rules.

Now the E145 is garbage. Flies like crap.
I flew the 145 for 5 years. Now the 747 for 5 months. I actually miss the 145, was such a fun airplane.

Mine has the following to say on the matter:

When an autopilot is not engaged: The PM should operate the FCP as directed by the PF

Earlier, it clarifies the meaning of "should:"

The word "should" is used to indicate that compliance is expected. Deviations are permitted only where an operational requirement exists.

And earlier than that, sets the scope for applying these SOP's in general:

It is understood that the standard operating procedures contained in this manual cannot cover every possible contingency. Common sense and sound judgement is required in dealing with varying situations that may arise.

When ATC gives us direct to a fix, a new altitude, and a frequency change all in the same transmission, I think it is an act of sound judgement for the PF to set the altitude bug so we don't forget the new altitude by the time the PM is finished doing the other 2 things.

I was supposedly hired for a data entry position, next thing I know im in the front seat and they want me to land the plane!?!. I thought hand-flying meant you use your hands! But I guess it's a 'thing'. Still catching up..
