Depends on the airline, some just require "at the airport" which can mean the parking lot. You can also do short-term princess parking at most airports and just walk in, at your own expense in extremis.

Also, some have more generous "commuter" policies for reserve. Take a snapshot of traffic if you are stuck and you may not get dinged for being late.

True, but if it takes you 2 hours to get to the airport without traffic and you are working with a 2 hour call out, you are not going to last very long at the company.
