Road & Track magazine just called the Miata one of the “greatest sports cars” ever, on the same shortlist as the Cobra and 911. Pretty much every other enthusiast pubs categorizes it as a sports car, as does the SCCA (Sports Car Club of America) and sanctioning bodies.

But many people don’t know the difference between a sports car, a “sporty” car, a muscle car and a pony car.

And some just don’t care how it’s been defined, they’ll just make up whatever they want. So no discussion possible. But a humorous picture may still get a laugh ...

The layman opinion of my friend and former valet, who’s driven everything from chromed-out Bentleys to Aventadors, is that, “It was just really fun to drive. I’d say give it the benefit of the doubt. An unpretentious sports car.”
