Default Polarized Sunglasses

I've heard people say it causes a problem. Have any of you experienced anything. I had a set of Ray Ban's but they are now in the bottom of a lake in NC. Anyone have any insight on get polarized or not?

I would avoid polarized sunglasses. I bought a polarized pair and it turned the sky purple when I looked out the window in the CRJ.

Now, I wear Oakley Gold Iridium lenses. They are amber in color and really bring in the light but block the harmful rays. I'd also say they can get you an another 1/4 mile visibility as well...but you can't reduce your approach mins by that factor.

I have a pair of polarized Maui Jim's, and they don't cause a problem for me in the ERJ.

Had polarized in the CRJ and now in the Citation. Only on the rare occassion did it create a "color" effect in the windows on the CRJ, and it never was enough to distract or impede my abilities.

YMMV, but I'd buy polarized. (For what it's worth, the picture in my avatar was taken through a pair of polarized sunglasses in the CRJ).

I have them and they're harmless in the ERJ.

Not sure that everyone understands the real problem with polarized glasses. The windshield interference is not that big a deal, but another aircraft may actually become invisible if the angle to the sun is right. Polarized glasses are designed for water sports, not flying.

Exactly Rick. Here is a quote from the FAA's pilot safety brochure on sunglasses:

POLARIZATION. Polarized lenses are not recommended
for use in the aviation environment. While useful for
reflected light from horizontal surfaces such as
snow, polarization can reduce or eliminate the
instruments that incorporate anti-glare filters. Polarized
may also interfere with visibility through an aircraft
by enhancing striations in laminated materials and
sparkle of light that reflects off shiny surfaces such
aircraft’s wing or windscreen, which can reduce the
has to react in a “see-and-avoid” traffic situation.

The entire document is HERE.

Polarized sunglasses dont work in the CL/RJ or the 737. I've found that Randolphs and Raybans have always worked well.
