I wasn't really surprised by the vote turnout.. hopelessly disappointed, but not really surprised. From the pilots I know of, some are just outright anti-union, based on their previous experiences or whatever.
I believe many others were just plain ignorant of the situation. I'm a newbie myself, but I was fortunate enough to fly many legs with captains who answered my numerous questions. Granted, these are their opinions, but I learned a lot of things I hadn't known before. And it wasn't just pro-union captains, they included mainline US Air pilots who had a.. uhm, rather strong negative reaction to the word "ALPA," but even they acknowledged that the legal and medical representation was beneficial.
The company did a good job with their anti-union/ALPA propaganda... after I read those, I started to think they had good points... and had not I have spoken to some of the more experienced captains in the company, I would not have realized how terribly skewed those newsletters had been.
I think other FOs didn't have the opportunity to learn more.. or didn't care to learn more. They're still new, so they don't realize how badly they can be screwed. That and there's the mentality that "I'll just get my quick upgrade and get the heck out." well, we would all like to get the heck out as soon as we can, but that's obviously not reality.
Then lastly I think many others were just apathetic. Kinda like not voting for congresspeople/senators/president. I've heard several people say, "If it happens it happens.. if it doesn't it doesn't.. I think it'll pass anyway so I'm not gonna vote.." If I personally heard a few people say that, I imagine that there were many more of them who thought this way. They don't think it makes a difference, but apparently 4 votes would've made the biggest difference!!!
oh I forgot.. I think there might also be some who just didn't want to pay the union dues.

How funny will it be if SAAB goes anti-XJT after a year like he did at Colgan.
SAAB, please...you made a decision to leave and so far it has worked out that is great for you. It just gets so old hearing you go on and on about how bad Colgan is and how the pilots who work there are idiots...you do not work here anymore! Get over it.
Oh and by the way I have been here a year, home everynight, and had 120 credit and 98 block last month. That is what it seems you base everything on, right?

Using your logic if we make dirt to begin with, what is 2% of dirt. It is the big ballers like Saab making $24 an hour for first year FO pay...now 2% of that, now we are talking real money
Sarcasm intended

Got lawyers backing you up if someone makes a booboo?
Got medical advice and help if you lose your medical for a while?
Got an ASAP program?
Got a contract?
The list is endless.

Got a commuter clause? (you don't commute but what about coming back from a nice vacation in Europe the day before work?)
Yeah, I can not tell you how many time I have been stuck in Europe. Twice last week alone, I'll take the private jet next time.
Got lawyers backing you up if someone makes a booboo?
nope.
Got medical advice and help if you lose your medical for a while?
Yes, they are called doctors and I do not think they are limited to unions. Us plain folk can use them too.
Got an ASAP program?
Yes, we do have the ASAP program.
Got a contract?
The list is endless.

Your about 9 months behind reality. Colgan is on the verge of becoming a large regional, ask management themselves 800-1000 pilots by 2009. Including options 55+ Q's. Like it or not Colgan pilots should be compared to everyone else now, because they are in the same whipsaw boat, get it yet cowboy? If you want to think less of yourself then go for it, Skybus is hiring BTW.
Oh and guess who represented Colgan at the NMB yesterday, MF and Buddy Casey from PINNACLE, not Mike. Buddy will most likely be your new CEO in the near future so you may want to get to know him. For example, he used to work with Frank Lorenzo, know who that is? If not you will sure learn the hard way.
