Isn't the fuel on the release figured with PPAS data? Unless ATC requests another speed from you, isn't this enough reason to fly the appropriate PPAS speed... especially on longer legs? I'm not saying it saves money or it doesn't, but it seems like a little CYA is in store for those following PPAS.

I'm not sure that is true - maybe a dispatcher can chime in.
I think we have a management conflict [understatement]. One part of manglement wants us to save money and be fuel effiecient. The other part wants us to have great operational numbers, to be on time. My opinion? People don't buy jets to go slow.

I hear ya, but why are the expensive pilots flying slow and the cheap help flying fast?

If bendo and Delta wanted to get real PPAS results they'd shove it down someone elses throat and have our too-expensive senior captains fly fast with the fuel savings.

If our crew costs were the main factor, which I think is a load anyway.

Supposedly that should be the case, but you can save gas elsewhere on the flight...you can make or break fuel savings in just how you manage the descent and approach.

I never flew PPAS at Comair and always came in under the burn. You just gotta do it Southwest style. Ask for shortcuts and plan your climb/descent the right way.

Meanwhile CHQ, Mesa, and the rest of DCI are screaming along at .84, blowing Delta's fuel budget out the tailpipe and only saving pennies on crew costs with their 3rd year CAs and 1st year FOs.

Shouldn't Comair be flying fast and the other guys be flying slow?
PPAS, Pilot Pay Augmentation System. If you are a line holder, then PPASS will increase your pay, unless it’s the last leg of a trip or the last leg of nice overnight. If you are on reserve, then who cares. You can use the system to your advantage by flying PPAS to increase your pay. (And save the company money of fuel cost.)
