Many of the FO's now are PIC typed because we now do IRO(relief pilot) duties. So, even if that Capt is sleeping and I'm sitting in the left seat, there is no PIC to be had. The airlines when interviewing you expect it to be the guy who is signs for the airplane(and ultimately responsible) and there is only one guy per flight that fits that description, the Captain.

Ok, see, that's the impression I was under; that when you alternated, that that time would count as TPIC for the FO even though he is overall and officially SIC.
