RJs aren't limited by time since built. There's nothing that says after 15 years an RJ must be put to rest. They are time and cycle limited on the airframe. Our CRJs run an average of 11 hours on 7 flights a day. I have heard that the lifetime is approx 45000 hours, not sure how many cycles though. 7011 is somewhere in the upper 30000s on hours. It is the oldest CRJ in North America, certified in 1993.
11 hrs/day X 365 days/yr = 4,015 hours/yr
4,015 X 14 years = 56,210 hours.
Despite what the company may be telling you, I would guess that the actual utilization has actually averaged less than 8 hours/day.
40,000 hours / 14 years = 2,857 hours/yr
2,857 hours / 365 days = 7.83 hours/day

That is amazing. I thought an aircraft could be in service over 25 plus years. Are the regional jets not built like Boeing, MD and Airbus jets that are currently out there? Is it just the quality of manufacturing or the continuous wear and tear on the airframe? Thanks for the information. I find the airline industry very intriguing.

Flyboy, thanks for that quick math lesson. I used to work in the CVG ramp tower, and when I'd get bored, I'd start looking at aircraft routing (several CVG ramp tower agents have gone on to become Flight Controllers). Before the December '05 (or was it Dec '06?) reduction, the average daily usage of an aircraft was upwards of 11-12 hours, depending on where/how the plane was routed (I'm talking the 50s only, 40s and 70s were a little lower). We had one of the highest daily aircraft utilization numbers. Now, with the current flight schedule, daily has dropped to below 11. Next time I look at Fleetwatch, I'll do an audit and see how it turns out.

Haha, leave it to a Comair guy to correct everyone else.
Yes, we are returning some of our aircraftsss as part of the CRJ100/CRJ900 swapout. They are not the oldest/highest time birds in the fleet, just part of the lessor's group of aircraftsssss that are going back. I've seen a few out there flying for Chautauqua with Continental colors, Skywest with Midwest colors, etc....
