SWA also has ZERO international flying. When 9-11 happened, they didn't have 777's and 747's stuck all over the globe paying humongous hotel bills for all their passengers. SWA's model is different than others. It's like comparing our government to Switzerlands................... yeah, they both govern, but that's about it. One thing about the well oiled machine..........it's stock has literally been in the tank for the last 5 years or so. The analysts have been predicting their party would be coming to a close and maybe it finally has. Today's rose is tomorrows weed. Happens all the time..................

southwest also has their point-to-point business model unlike the cumbersome hub and spoke model of the legacy airlines. The only plane southwest flies is the 737, and their entire company is built around that plane. They turn a plane in 15-25 minutes, I believe, the motto is get those planes flying as fast as possible. They are a well-oiled machine and their growth is always extremely conservative, and fuel doesn't hurt.
They also make you buy your own type rating, which reduces training costs.

Question: Are we still planning to hire:
Answer: Yes, however at a reduced amount. Our current growth plan still requires more pilots then the pilots who would have retired. In other words we are still growing, not just replacing retiring pilots. Keep in mind in this business with oil over $100 and the economy suffering there could always be changes in our level of operations, but for now, here is our TENTATIVE hiring plan for 2008
Jan: 40 per month
Feb- Apr 16 per month
May - Oct: 4 - 8 per month
Nov: 32 per month
Dec 40 per month
The above is from the CAL EWR chief pilot's office. It is the most current info. 208 pilots this year.

southwest's model may be different but they do the exact same thing and that is get people from point a to b. just because you fly to different destinations doesn't mean it's different.

I could be wrong, but isn't enrollment in flight schools at an all-time high? ATP is having to refuse business because they're so busy. Imagine the people that will be backlogged in the system should we go into a recession/depression.

I know that some of the local flight schools are refusing business for lack of CFI's. Either nobody bothers to get the ticket anymore, or as soon as they do they go off to the regional flavor of the month. These same schools then spin it as "We're too busy and cannot handle the influx of students."

I left the book at my office so correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't Southwest employees donate a small percentage of their paycheck for a while to help offset the cost of fuel? This was several years ago when everyone experienced a sharp increase in fuel prices.
