I grew up three miles east of STL. I survived. It's not a bad area, just not a good one.
Go a little west (St. Charles, St. Peters, O'Fallon) of the airport, or just a few miles south (University City, Richmond Heights, Maplewood, Webster Groves) and the neighborhood gets much nicer.

I lived about 40 min east of St. Louis in a little town named Highland, IL. I suppose a lot of places outside of the metro are quite nice, I just think the drive to the airport would get old. I suppose thats the trade off unless you want to live right near the airport, but its not as "quiet".

I would drive 5 hours if it meant I didn't have to fly the Airlines to work!
