Default 121 F/O would like to instruct, have ?????

Hello folks, I currently fly for a regional carrier and would like to also do some instruction. My questions are as follows. How can I instruct and still fly for my regional and instruct without getting into trouble with my regional? Also where can I find the information in the FAR's. I figure that it can be done if you are instructing under part 91. Hope these questions arent to stupid. And if you only have a smart aleck answers and comments please do it someplace else. Thx

Most airlines have policies saying that you can't have any other flying jobs. But you can do as much outside flying as you want that isn't for pay...most airlines could care less about that. Consult your policy manual, I would be surprised if it doesn't specifically mention outside flying jobs...

Yea my company's FOM labels flight instruction as a non-commercial flying job.

If you want to test the limits, you could offer free "maneuver demo flights" with paid ground instruction. Then double your fee for ground school.

Technically, the FAA can count as commercial flying any flying which requires a commercial certificate, which includes CFI work whether paid or not.

They could even bust you for teaching a family member to fly on weekends and not counting it against 121 limits. The reality is that they don't seem to care about "friends-and-family" non-paid instruction.

But I think they would nail you for the ground school scheme...it's based on the character of the flying, not whether any money or other compensation changed hands.

I know plenty of airline pilots that fly inthe Civil Air Patrol with me and instruct cadets.

Just to add in, the DE that I flew with for my private was a captain at an airline. He was paid for that. Any different policies on designated examiners?

As my screen name will show, I still actively teach with CAP and fly 121. CAP specifically has a "no compensation" rule for any of their flying. Its a great way to fly, build time, and give a little back to the flying community.
