They don't have to hold "all the cards".

It's a simple fact that SkyWest is a well run company, with lots of money in the bank, and a sound business model (for an airline).

Yes, if it tanks any time soon, there's some bad stuff going on that will affect more than just SkyWest.

Of course, things could change down the road, as they did for Eastern, Pan Am, TWA, etc.

Funny. People said the same thing about ACA 6 years ago. Well run company, lots of money, and a sound business model... Heck for a while we even had Boyd (the eternal optimist that he is) convinced about our future.

It only took us 13 months to go Tango Uniform after we changed our business model. (Keep in mind too that we also flew for different carriers).

Never say never!

There's plenty to do after a company tanks. 30-40% will probably get out of the business (real estate, office jobs, sales, etc). Of that 30-40%, 10-20% will be flying again or looking to get back in within 2 years.

Some will go to fractionals. (We had a good number go to NetJets). Some will find homes at other airlines (Continental, JetBlue, Compass, AirTran and Chautauqua seem to be where a large number ended up.) Others (like myself) will find corporate or charter.

The important thing is to ALWAYS have a backup plan. At the very least, always be thinking about the future and potential opportunities and pit falls. Of course networking isn't going to do you any harm either!

Days off are not relaxing days off. They are simply recovery for the next round of abuse on the east coast. Additionally, I have essentially no network of buddies to help me along to the next step. I see colleagues of mine getting jobs at UAL, CAL, Delta, etc based on who they know from college or military or whatever. Because my background in flying was not in the US I do not have that. Still waiting on a call from a major even though my resume is pretty solid.

I simply don't want to wait forever. There is more to life than getting abused by dispatch because I want to get routed around thunderstorms to ATL and finishing up my days at 2 AM.

I hear ya and I think what is even more depressing then that, is once you get that dream job at CAL, DAL (Insert airline here), you realize its the same exact thing, with older more bitter people, probably a more miserable QOL for longer all for a hopefully bigger paycheck, unless of course they merge again or another terrorist attack...........

I think if you lived in base your life would be 1000000% better. What sort of aviation jobs are available where you live? Would you consider moving?

I hate moving but sometimes a calculated move is a smart "move" to make IMO.

Air Wisconsin was available where I live.

NWA is available where I live.

Swissair was available where I lived.

I don't live on the East Coast and signed up at AWAC because it's called AWAC. Shoulda jumped to SKW at year 1. I have tried the east coast thing. Too crowded. Too expensive and not really where I like to be anyway.

Anyway, no big deal. There will be a solution sooner rather than later!
