I opened up a fidelity account - more choices in terms of mutual funds than Vanguard IMO. Looking through the returns as well, them seem pretty evenly split. But there are a bunch of companies that do these.
Even if you just put your $$ into an average money market account, you'll be getting 4.3-4.7% interest off of it right now - about $880 per year with $20k in the account. Not bad - my bank of america savings account pays about 1% interest or something rediculously low.
For part time income, I run a home business doing internet and print media design. It basically pays for rent every month. Also, a large chunk of my income comes from per diem - I earn about ~$36/day TAX FREE with per diem (~$450/month) and spend about $60/month on food while I'm on trips. I pack a cooler and bring a loaf of bread, peanut butter, honey, salmon, crackers, oatmeal, and cans of soup. Costs about $15 for a 4-day. I was cheap while as a flight instructor, and the same mindset has flowed over now as a I fly for a regional. Spending all your per diem on overnights, is, IMO, stupid.
And I agree with UTAH - I bid lines that have a low credit but lots of days off in a row, then try and pick up 20-30 hours per month which goes over the guarantee. If anything, this screws the company, because I'm actually blocking 60 hours but crediting 90-100, vs. blocking 90-100 and crediting 90-100 hours.

I actually work part-time as a firefighter. You'd think that this is more of a career thing rather than a second job, but it is very rewarding and I actually make ok money at it sometimes. In fact, the Captain of my Company is also a pilot; he flies a G4, and another former firefighter from my dept. is now working in CA flying helicopters. I guess that this job draws a lot of the same personality types...like the kind of people that cannot be tied down to a typical desk job, a common pilot trait. Downside: there is a bit of a training involved which can take some time, but myself and other pilots have made it work. I feel I have the two best jobs in the world.

If your interested in sales, I have a great job for anyone. I own a full color digital imaging company, www.impactcolormedia.com, we specialize in selling full color business cards to businesses. It is the easiest sales job ever. They are already buying business cards, this product is MUCH better and the price is about the same. I would estimate you will close over 35% of all businesses you call on. I have full time reps making over 50K. As long as you continue to sell for me I pay commisions on the reorders (no work for you, all done online). Work whenever you want, wherever you want.
Thats the good stuff. Now the bad stuff:
It is a SALES job....no sales, no money. Commision only. No salary, no insurance, etc.. It is what you make of it. It can be great, or it can be crummy. Once again, its whatever you put into it. It is however, a great product at a great price point, which translates into great sales. I pay well but don't expect to get rich, but you could easily exceed your FO pay with only doing this 2 or 3 days a week.
If you are interested you can email me at [email protected]

On the topic of crappy bank savings accounts, I have to say that I've been really pleased with ING. It's running about 4% now and if there are any strings attached, I've yet to find them. http://ingdirect.com
