Consideration is always given to the applicant who is already a guard member. But I have met lots of guys who were not already in. I feel your best is to try applying to as many units as you can. Anyways best of luck to you.

Default Reserve and Federal Employee

L-1011-500,
Does the ANG give preference to prior active duty who is currently a USAF Reservists and also a USAF Federal Employee? My dream, ever since I joined active duty in 1997 was to become a pilot. I will be training for my PPL at Edwards AFB, where I currently work as a civil service employee, at the Aero club beginning in May. My plan is to join any guard unit that will take me, but I prefer a fighter unit probably in the NY or NJ area. There may be a problem with my age though, because I'm turning 29 in June, but I hear they give waivers for prior active service. I'm the kind of guy who always volunteers for deployments and always tries to work available man days (I'm single). I love being attached to the reserves, but my current unit at March ARB doesn't get deployed much and with my current job (Ammo) at a ARW, I don't really get to do much but work with Chaff, Flare, and small arms mostly (get to work with missiles and bombs at Edwards though). My contract with reserves is up in a few months and I gotta get back to the tip of the spear. Sorry for the long post, but I would really appreciate some help with someone in the know. Thanks a lot.

hepcat,
As a present ANG pilot, I'd like to caution you regarding a unit to fly for. BRAC of 2005 has placed the ANG in a tailspin. Many units (particularly fighter units) do not have a clear future right now. A lot of the pointy nose airplanes are being sold to foreign countries with transport or even UAV follow ons becoming their next mission. Some units will even be closing up their doors.

I'm not trying to scare you into not applying just make sure you research the unit that you are trying to get into.

Good luck

Im curious reading these posts, I am currently working on my commercial multi and will have a CRJ-700 type in about 5 months. Im shooting for regionals at the moment and have no ties with the ANG. I will be married in June and I'm wondering if I should think about applying for a guard unit. If so, should I do it before I apply with regionals, or after I have completed training and am hired by a regional? Also which regionals work well with an ANG schedule? What is pay and life like in the ANG? Im not real familiar with it so as much help as I can get about my aviation career is very helpful. My ultimate goal if it helps is to get back home in Louisville and fly for UPS.(just like everyone else.) But I do have a few contacts there but anything to put me above some competition helps, like flying regionals and the ANG. My problem is that Im getting married, so I dont know if doing both will workout or not. Thanks.

I got hired off the street into a C-130 unit that was thankfully able to avoid being BRAC'd. I had my CFI-AIM and about 800 hours and 50+ turbine multi when I interviewed, along with a 3.7 college GPA. I go UPT sometime in October.

I lived in southern IN and worked for UPS for over a year and looked at the 123rd at SDF (I'm from LEX); good luck getting on with that unit. They don't do much hiring off the street for UPT candidates as they have a long list of guys trying to network for UPS, and you've gotta have a strong inside rec to go along with a strong package (and I knew a former OPS commander there). Save your money on the CR7 type and go buy 100+ hours of multi-time instead at LOU; you'll be much more marketable for a regional job. Get your TT up to about 1000 and you can go work at CHQ in Louisville, attend Six Flags over Jesus, and join the UPS pilot networking pipeline!

Good luck!

As for your age you are cutting it pretty close. I would put in as many applications as you can and do it fast. Don't fixate on being a fighter pilot because if your dream is to fly then go where you can fly.

I fly in the Guard and for a Regional carrier. The only problem I've had is in the last two years my carrier has docked my pay on "off" days for "not being available for call". Total BS. I also loose 401K payments while on on extended AD. Good Luck.

You limit your options by just looking at units around your home. You gotta be willing to make that jump and relocate if the right unit will hire you. It shows dedication and if you love to fly and want it bad enough then it will pay off in the long run.
