I recognize generational differences in cash as well as international differences in tipping culture (and I’d love to get closer to the European model), but as it stands now $1 per van ride. It won’t break the bank and it’s at the very least a nice gesture towards one’s fellow man.
There are exceptions - a rude van driver who leaves you waiting half an hour and doesn’t load your bag, as well as the single parent working this as a side job when they’re not firefighting.

If driving on the roads is as dangerous as they say it is - that is a lot of risk I took on a daily basis back in the day.
So...the other day some co-workers and I were at Jimmy John's (a sandwich shop for those that don't know the chain). The receipt had a space for a tip. I noticed that the guy in front of me added a tip. When we sat down I asked him if he tipped a few days prior when we got lunch at Wendy's. He sort of laughed and said something to the effect of 'of course not'. I asked him what Jimmy John's did differently than Wendy's to get a tip. They both took the order, made the food, got them a CUP for their drink (not even the drink) and you waited at the register for the food (or they called your name and you went up to get it) and you bussed your own table. Nothing different than what any other fast food establishment might do.
The second guy came and sat down and I asked him the same question. He had also given a tip. When asked again - they both said - 'because they asked for it and a space was provided'!
I'll have to check next time I go to Burger King, Taco Bell, or Wendy's - but I don't remember a spot for a tip on the receipt - and certainly wasn't one when I worked there!
As a van driver - tips were a large part of my compensation. I did not make minimum wage. I appreciated my $3.50 tip from a crew of 5 on SWA.

I think maybe you didn't understand my reason for asking the question - much of which had to do with this thread on APC.
So...you like to sit in silence at lunch? We don't. We talk about all sorts of things! Hummmm.....maybe YOU are the one that wouldn't be invited to our lunchs.

More importantly, stop judging others for something that has absolutely no effect on you. Maybe the person that doesn't tip is just cheap, maybe they have some extenuating financial situation that necessitates them saving every buck they can. If you stress about your fellow crew members tipping, you really need to reexamine your priorities.

I go to pay for my lunch (I was having lunch with two other co-workers and one of their sons
), and I pulled out the credit card! I was the last to pay and theo there guys were already out at the plane. Guess what?? CASH ONLY! What??? I don't remember that! Luckily I had my **secret** $20 stashed in my wallet Tom - you are so right! Whew! 
Oh - you thought I was judging TheWeatherMan my co-workers at Jimmy John's. So you can ask a question without judging? Well...you are wrong in that respect TWM - no judging here. An interest observation and a realization that 'if you ask, they will tip' societally engineered and well placed blank line can generate an extra dollar for the business!

It's obviously a standard practice to tip van drivers, whether you like it or not. Do what you want. There's no written rule either way as to how you want to spin it. But buyer beware: If you don't tip, make no mistake. You will you be judged as a cheapskate by the driver and the rest of your crew that tipped. No doubt about it. Giving a buck to the driver ain't gonna break the bank, especially with the way airlines are paying these days, even the regionals. It's a tiny portion of your per diem. Like 1/10th.
If you don't wanna tip, that's your discretion. You can keep justifying it any way you'd like to make yourself feel better about not doing it. Like it or not, we will judge you. Especially when even the FAs are tipping and you aren't. Happy tipping!
