A few mornings of push-ups ought to do the trick. At least it did in our class.

Don't worry about the specific approach. It's an ils. If you can fly one, you can fly them all. Worry more about basic attitude instrument flying and raw data approaches. It's really not that hard.

I never thought I would be that guy.. BUT: now that I am on the line and I see what it takes to fly these complex jets (and fly them correctly) the thought of 500/50 wonders is downright scary.

I'm not saying it can't be done... But I have pesonally witnessed folks with much more experience wash out of sim training or get on the line and.. Well, lets just say they don't make it out of probie status.

Some of the stories I hear from the Captains I fly with are interesting. Including one where the jumpseater had to step in an perform rapid PM duties because the FO went into freak out mode on a go-around down to minimums.

I think ours was an ILS into LAX, Raw data. Only used the FD for the climb/hold, and that was it. just dont let anything fully deflect and you'll be ok. And yea, use that guy sitting next to you.

Study the gouges and be prepared. they know you look at the gouges ,so they expect you to know what's coming next.

There have been so many people over the years that have been hired with half that time. One of my good friends went right into a EMB-120 with 251 tt and 19 multi. He was a Captain for ASA for 9 years, and now he's at SWA. It's not the time, it's the individual.

For many years I believed the same... But now I see that people such as your friend are the exception to the rule.

Believe me.. I am a big supporter of sub-1000 hour guys getting hired by airlines, only because that is what very succesful airlines around the world do such as Lufthansa, TAM, British, etc...

The difference is that the pilots at those airlines are nurtured from the start and their training is geared towards those pilots.

Here we hire guys who are still gaining experience flying in class bravo in a Cessna and throw them into a very intensive 121 jet training program which was designed for pilots with much more experience.

Some make it by simple rote memorization of procedures and profiles.. Then in the real world things fall apart.
