Good Luck!

Why are they being so picky if they need pilots?

Because demand ≠ supply.

i took a chance and submitted my stuff on airline apps and received an auto response email that said they weren't hiring at this time. is that what i'd receive if i don't pass the minimums threshold? or are they pausing the hiring momentarily if they're overwhelmed with resumes?

Probably. They have plenty of applicants to choose from that currently meet the minimums right now.

Because they can be. They want to get the best they can get from the current pool of applicants. They aren't going to take just anybody off the street.

Because they need to find the right people. Those being people ones that will work for free. Easily brainwashed into feeling as if they have invested too much time with a company to leave because they are unhappy. Typically regional airline stuff. Oh yeah, and because they can be picky.

This may be a silly question but if your resume is walked in by a captain and you are reasonably qualified what are the chances of getting a call as things stand now at ASA?

I'm a pretty junior FO and they called my 2 recs. One is very qualified and the other exceeds the mins, both have prior 121/turbine time.

The recs took quite a bit of follow up, with ASA dropping the ball on phone tag with the applicants.

That email is an auto-response only. I got the same email, then got a call for an interview a few days later.
