I interviewed a few places and picked the place that people didn't seem totally miserable at. I figured if the market tanks and I spend a few years here at least I'll have a good group of people stuck with me.

Upgrade time and getting off reserve quick was what I looked at mainly. But it's the aviation industry, the only thing for sure is that you can't plan in the slightest.

Just because they have a base here doesn't mean you'll be based there right out of groundschool. Keep that in mind. You should also look at pay, schedules, benifits, contracts etc....

You should take your own advice.

Apply to all the airlines that appeal to you. When you get an offer, take it. If you get more than one, choose which you like best, then move so you will be home based. Commuting is for the birds, from what I hear.

I'm shortly going to be an STL to IAH commuter. There are only 4 ExpressJet and 1 Chautauqua every day, which has me just a bit nervous. The downside of course if that you could probably commute much easier on Southwest, but then you've gotta find a way to get from Hobby to IAH. If you're going to a Continental hub, EWR is actually easier from STL because there's mainline, Shuttle, ExpressJet, and Southwest all going. But I was fortunate enough to get a spot at a pretty senior base so I'd be hard pressed to give it up to voluntarily go to EWR for the commute alone. Maybe eventually...

Would you keep your 12 year Mesa 900 CA seat along with the chance of being on RSV every month and having 5 CRJ 700s contractually pulled down in Nov for United with no industry standard contract in sight?.. Rethink your question along with having heavy international time vs having another 5000 hrs of PIC RJ time. Which would you choose ?.. I choose not being a 12 yr CRJ FO making $37 hr thank you. I have taken advantage of 3 type ratings and over 5000 PIC Jet and over 9000 TT and have survived 2 furloughs and keeping my CA seat throughout each one.

Maybe you should have chosen a different regional.... or not spent so long at said regional. I mean, (based on the APC data) you had at least three years of left seat time in 2007 during the last hiring "boom".
