Sort of like how per diem and tax returns work? The IRS says you can account for $XX without receipts in our industry as it is "deemed substantiated." So most airline workers deduct their full allowable amount because receipts aren't necessary up to the maximum set by the IRS, but you know full well that most don't spend anywhere close to the limit. No one is doing anything illegal, but the spirit and intent of the IRS rules are certainly not followed.

Out of all the places I have applied (Skywest, AirWisky, XJT, etc), they are the only ones that have given me an interview date.

I refuse to be a pathetic waste of life and sit on unemployment and contribute to all the problems our country already has. I want to go to another place so I don't have to worry about the new regs in 2013...

...and i'm certainly not going back to instructing...I've had enough of that!

I'll try not to discourage you too much, but the morale is really, really low right now. Contract expired in 2007 and honestly no clue when that will get accomplished. Basically at the mercy of the government and the NMB. I thoroughly enjoy almost everyone I fly with. Some great professionals here. A lot of changes have to be made here in order for me to recommend this place to anybody.

I think at some point this will be a good place to work again...it's a matter of when and at what cost.

If you're working a job and making less than your weekly UI allowance I see nothing wrong with continuing to file, provided of course you're truthful in reporting your earnings. That's part of what unemployment is for.

It's not double dipping. The checks you get for the first month at repugnant are per diem. Not taxable. It's not a wage and thus not required to be reported to UEI. The state unemployment attorney I discussed this with told me that it is absolutely expected and justified. After paying into the insurance policy for 25 plus years I think 3 weeks of payment from the policy still has been a good gamble on their part.
I'm sure he/she has paid more than their share into unemployment insurance over the years, why not use the insurance when you qualify? It's insurance for times that are out of your control that you aren't earning a wage. He/she is furloughed-check out of his/her control, he/she isn't earning a wage-check.

Just to clarify - no employee pays into the "unemployment insurance" - this is only paid by the employer to the state, and in many cases the states have not managed the UI very well, and have had to get loans from the feds. Employees ONLY pay into FICA (Social Security) and Medicare, and the employer matches the contribution (except that FICA contribution for employees has been reduced last year and this year). The states are now required to pay the UI loan amounts back with interest, which at least in Indiana has led to a surcharge on all employers.

I will! Remember you're a pilot and make less then a cashier at 7-11. Hows that for problems our country has. If its legal, I'll take every penny.

It is part of my total compensation is it not? I don't pay directly into a vacation or sick leave bank but that also is a part of my whole package. Whether I directly or indirectly pay into it it is part of compensation. I bet if you look into your employers employee handbook they have it listed as part of your total compensation. I know every employer I've been a part of listed it as part of my compensation.

Are you furloughed Eagle? Then come on over , 145 time will help..but be careful, you may get furloughed from us in Sept. For last 3 years we have had seasonal workers in this low morale airline..

Who knows what tomorrow holds with AMR ch.11 .. you may go back to Eagle or you may end up staying in chq and fly former Eagle routes. Be ready to face the music no matter what..

The pilots at RAH will welcome and help you get settled in here. The purpose of RAH Contract NOW! | Teamsters Local 357 is to inform not scare. All airlines are not equal as there are better airlines to work for. However, please note that RAH is in final meditation and there is a very real possibility of a strike while you are on probation OR a furlough once their temporary need for pilots is over.
