Default Forced Relocation?

Okay, maybe not forced, but looking at some airline's pages, they seem to be saying that they want you to relocate to the base assigned. That seems like a lot to ask, am I understanding this correctly? One of them is American Eagle. I recall seeing a few others, but I don't remember for sure what ones they were. So my question is, do they really want you to move to where they assign you? They won't allow commuting?

No, they wouldn't force you to move to a certain base. I work for AE and I would say almost half of our employees commute to work from far away. They are just saying that when you are assigned a base then you will be responsible for getting yourself there on time by either driving or jumpseating on other airlines, etc.

Flyby1206 is correct. I know of NO airline that forces you to relocate. I have friends that fly for Mesa, XJT, CHQ, AE, ASA, and many majors; none of which force there pilots to relocate.

You might mean a force domicile change, which is when a domicile is closed or downsized. Then the pilots and FA's will be forced to change domiciles but still not forced to relocate.

Word of caution regarding the wording: some airlines are more "commuter friendly" than others. Some companies have commuter clauses in their contract which allow you to avoid a "missed trip" issue if there were legitimate issues beyond your control that prevented you from getting to your base in time (ie the plane you are on diverts or goes mechanical, etc etc). Others have very little tolerance for commuters. Colgan is one example I have heard of that has little sympathy for commuters since they expect all their crews to move to the bumfudge towns they base at. But as long as you get to your base by show time then most companies don't care if you live in your car out in the parking lot or you are a 9 hour 2 leg international commuter.

Something to also keep in mind: Airline piloting and flight attending are probably the only careers where you don't have to live where your job is. For 99% of the workers out there, if they get a job thats located in another town, they're moving there. If I were to get a job as a forecaster with AccuWeather after college, I'd be moving from central NJ to State College, PA. As much as pilots gripe about commuting, it actually is a unique "privilege" of the job.

I'd say it leans more towards being a unique "curse" of the job.

It's actually a great benefit to the airlines. They can base their airplanes at the location that is best for their purposes and not worry about attracting talented labor to east sh*thole, NJ. The labor will just commute.

If pilots were forced to live in domicile then there really WOULD be a pilot shortage, or airlines would have to relocate their hubs to nice cities.

Mnay pilots, including me, wouldn't do this job if we had to live there.

sure if this stays open long enough, someone will say that typical non-flying companies will pay you a relocation check, however, it typically doesn't offset the difficulties of moving.

One friend however, did take the check so that all he had to do was move his clothes and television and lazy boy to a new city, and after getting thier was able to buy furniture....but, i barely think that's true "compensation"
