I say PBS is a pay cut. We may have to sorta agree to disagree on that one, though. PBS, while certainly a concession, will not necessarily affect everyone's paycheck. I bid days off/QOL, and therefore I think it's been a really, really long time since I've had a paid removal in transition. Actually, I'd have to think long and hard about when I was last removed from any flying with pay -- it's been that long. For sure, the guys who bid massive transition conflicts and get removed from 20hrs of flying each month -- all paid -- are going to be in for a nasty hit when PBS goes live. There's training conflicts, too, but for Captains that's a twice a year one-time hit. FOs, once a year. |
plus the PTO bank will suck for PVDs no more getting 10 hours for a 2 day trip with 1 leg the second day. If you PVD that type you will eat massively into your PTO bank. Also vacation will eat into your PTO bank, so for us newer FOs who will get about 90 hours, our 2 week vacation alone will be about 45 hours of it. Figure 4 hours of sick time per month which is about what we get now and their is your entire bank. You take a PVD and your over and not getting paid for something. Those who think something will carry over are nuts.
PBS will be the major hit for most of us. I personally enjoy having a good amount of open time. I get rid of my 73 hour 13 day off weekend lines and make something do able out of it. I usually get the credit up to 95ish. That 20 hours per month at $36/hour is $700/month, that is $8500/year. I can not afford to not make the $8500/year. I hope many find this out and it motivates them to greener pastures. If enough people leave though the company will find creative ways to give people whatever amount they need to stay (or at least to meter the trickle). With 50% of the pilots in this country retiring over the next 15 years, with the wave starting now, hiring will be just about everywhere over the next few years, and in droves. Its a compounding thing too, because people will be going all which directions. It wont just be RJ guys going to Mainline. You will have jetblue FOs going to UAL, Eagle fos going to Jetblue, Eagle Captains to United, Skywest FOs to Atlas, Atlas FOs to Delta, Gojetz FOs to whoever is on strike ETC... Not to mention the upgrading that will occur at these places. I know when United has hired my old man is not only flying with new guys at are from the RJ level or military, many are from discount airlines, corporate, etc. I know here comes Eaglefly and the naysayers about how I am wrong, but its my factually based opinion and I am welcome to have it. |
And the PBS was the one certainty that was coming in all this.
Now that we've folded with our line-bidding, there are only 3 regional airlines that have yet to adapt PBS (this is from our NC chair -- I think it's Commutair, Wisconsin, and maybe PSA?). With PTO, if you NEED a day off, and it's worth like 3 hours, you no longer have to worry about 'burning' a PVD and going with a PO at a loss of pay. I'm ok with PTO, since I'm going to have just ridiculous amount saved up from not calling sick all these years. Maybe now I can finally take that round-the-world trip :p |

TSA still hasn't given in. (We've agreed to "evaluate" it. But without an obligation to accept the garbage the company will inevitably shovel at us). |

Well, I asked Ryter this in person and he said yes. This is something they cannot take away. We've earned that (accrued sick). That'd be like them bagging everyone's 401K. Plus, there'd be one hell of a sick-out if people were to 'lose' all their accrued sick. Don't think the company's that dumb/reckless. |
