ATP Rule Change

No RJ's=no wide bodies.
JFK-DFW/ORD/MSY and that's just a drop in the bucket. The use of the RJ is hardly just a small city airplane.
Remember when there was no RJs and the airlines used DC-9s/727s/737s to connect those cities.
Take a look around the world most airlines don't use RJs to feed their hubs.
No RJs = No RJs... That's it.

The problem is that there are thousands of small towns all cross the country being served with RJ's. It isn't the small towns that will complain, but rather the major airlines that no longer have thousands of people from those small towns on their flights. The RJ's bring the people to the hub's. That is how it works.

Now, there are major corporations located in these small towns - corporations that rely on air transportation. With the loss of this service, the corporations will likely leave the small towns and move closer to the major cities. They expect 2-3 flights a day.

A 727 stopping in to Podunk USA 2-3 days a week really won't cut it anymore. That is what it used to be like.

It took a few years for congress to get this in place, they arent going to lower mins anytime soon, the families of the victims/ captain sully (oddly enough he supported the 1500 rule) and the general public will have an outcry before some kid can right seat with 750 or less hours anytime soon. Really the only people who are gonna hurt is mainline when to they have to start serving cities like TYS/BNA/MIA/DTW/STL with mainline again instead of 10x daily 50 seater and dont have the pilots or fleet to do so because they relied on Expressjet for so long to get it done.

If congress changed the ATP rule to the old standard tomorrow.... the airline industry will still have a problem. The lack of pilots is primarily a compensation issue. Although the new law does reduce the available pool, it does not have the impact that low pay is creating.
Change it back... who cares... there will still be a problem staffing regionals (and eventually mainline).

I do remember, whereas I grew up in the 70's and witness now called legacy carriers flying to small cities. The 70's was a different economics world compared with today's standards in which everyone did not fly on an airline. Don't expect many large carriers to go back into time to serve small markets because they can make more money operating long haul international flights.
