This happened at AE a few years back. It lead to a major overhaul of the CRJ training curriculum to emphasize high altitude flight in the CRJ. The CRJ-700 is NOT a forgiving jet up high. It needs to be watched. Keep the speed up, and all is fine. Get slow (less than .74), and you're asking for BIG trouble.

It has nothing to do with the CRJ. It has everything to do with pilots that pull back power and then start reading their USA Today. altitude limits won't solve that.

It's bloody embarrassing it has come to this, the culture of 'fly the block' needs to change like yesterday. We aren't the only operator having issues but the CMO decided to make their point with us apparently. Most of us know better than to fly the ridiculous speeds the magic box spits out but a few incidents are certainly too many.

The most disturbing thing to me about this new policy is the fact that there is a list of the inattentives and that the FAA and OCC will be strictly monitoring. Those two things go against everything that is supposed to be a just culture, which enhances safety. Anything that is even perceived to be less than a just culture increases risk.

AFAIK, the events that took place were mostly 700 a few minutes after level off. The lower altitude limits will hopefully help because it widens the buffer quite a bit so hopefully the readers will catch it before it's too late.

Ok, but having a list of people that messed up and telling pilots that the OCC and FAA will strictly monitor pilots goes against everything that is supposed to make things safer. Being punitive only entrenches pilots and that destroys any kind of safety culture that was purported to be there. That was the basis of programs like ASAP, FOQA, LOSA, etc. Its anonymous and its non-punitive. And this isn't just from a regulatory standpoint anyway, it's from both.
