My two cents but as others have said avoid commuting if you can. Living in base was the best decision I made in my airline career. In terms of leg length...SkyWest does all 700 flying out of DFW and it’s probably very comparable to the flying YX does. Upgrade time in less than one year for DFW right now if you have the time.

I absolutely agree that and airplane is an airplane. So the main reason I want the 170 is not beacuse it's a shiny jet, but the length of leg per segment and amount of legs it's does on a daily basis.
I have types in a few corporate jets, so I've had my share of the shiny jet syndrome lol, so definitely not chasing the 170 for those reasons. I have noticed that the 170 pretty much flies mainline legs. Is that not the case? People have told me they fly on avg 3-4 legs at most with a bulk of flying over 1.5 of flying per leg. I have zero interest in flying 5 one hour legs and overnighting in places like Appleton, Wi (no offense to people who live there) to be honest.
I am familiar with commuting. I did it for close to two years. Didn't love it, that's for sure, but I will sacrifice that for amount of legs, overall a good crew, flight time and good company culture.
So to touch on commuting. Besides getting bumped off, leaving on your off day for an early am flight the next day, picking up open time, and possible weather issues for commuting. Anything you have heard or encountered?
If it wasn't for the lack of flying I have been doing the last 6 months I wouldn't even think of leaving my current gig. Just want to fly more and less legs. Ha.

The commuter clause is not that difficult. Just have two flights listed that get you there before your show time. If you don't make it, you are covered. You get 4 of those in a rolling 12 month period. If you go over 4, you get an occurrence. You have up to 7 occurrences before you get canned. So basically you have to be able to not make your commute 11 times in a rolling 12 month period before anything serious happens.

Prior to my current job I commuted almost two years and never been bumped off my flight. Never missed work cause of a commute. Yea, it's a hassle, but not a deal breaker for me.
The only time I got bumped off was when I was trying to get to DAL from HOU. Got bumped off 5 times straight. Yup! Never doing that commute. Ha
Having not to deal with a crash pad is huge for me. Hence why I'm looking at BOS and DCA.

Love it that the company is still stating they will fire you if you get sick and can’t fly. Idiots

Eh not saying you should go out and test the system, but I hear stories all the time of guys going well over 7 and still have their jobs with nothing more than a finger wag. They won't fire anyone for occurrences due to staffing. Most people are not afraid whatsoever to bang out sick...even if you're "sick" more than 7 times in a year.

I think if you have the time realistically you can upgrade within a few months. We require 1000 121 and 2500TT. Since upgrades have gone so quick a lot of the 4 year 1000 hour restricted ATP folks dont have the time.
