A few questions
Will be applying to Republic in the coming weeks and just had a few questions..
- I am looking at DCA and BOS(have family there so no crash pad for me) as my options for bases and I am aware that in the regional world things change constantly, but as of now how long would it take me to aquire either one of those? From what I read on here Kansas City has a lot of early am dep and late pm arrivals(true?), otherwise that commute doesn't seem bad at all for me.
- Until I aquire my base will Republic just put me where they need me.. PIT, CMH, EWR and such?
- That said, I will be commuting from the Dallas area. Anyone else do that commute? I used to go to dca at least once a month non rev/jumpseat(only on SWA)and never had any problems, but this will be more on regular bases. Any issues?
- With DCA or BOS can one block a decent amount of flying/month? In an ideal world I would love to fly a ton, but also spend decent time at home. Does Republics schedule have bids that can make that happen for Jr guys?
- How many legs/day would you say you avg per duty day?
- Training still taking roughly 3 months? IND for all of it?
- Lastly. What your favorite and least favorite part of working at Republic?
Thank you for taking the time to read all my questions and thank you in advance for your responses.

Boston is super junior at the moment. No one knows how it will shape up since it’s still VERY new. Kansas City is an outstation, so yes, by nature it has to have early departures and late arrivals. You may be able to avoid one or the other though.
- Until I aquire my base will Republic just put me where they need me.. PIT, CMH, EWR and such?
You have to bid for which base you want; they can’t just send you anywhere they want. Unless I guess they only offer one option to your new hire class...even then you can bid on the monthly vacancies to a different base

Can’t help here

As you move up on the seniority list, you will have more control and higher credit trips. How fast that happens depends on the movement in your base. From the looks of things right now, that should happen pretty quick. That being said, commuting will really limit your options, because you will be looking for trips that are same-day commutable, not just for high credit trips.

Don’t know

The schedule flexibility has been a big favorite of mine. I wasn’t on reserve hardly at all, and have pretty much always gotten the days off I wanted. I hear a very different story from captains on reserve; they get abused and hate scheduling

Training footprint is roughly three months from Day 1 of Indoc to your final simulator validation. Then it's off to OE after an unknown period of time (not sure what it's looking like these days). This three months includes two weeks in IND, two weeks of systems home study, three weeks back in IND, then bouncing between CVG or STL (where the full motion sims are) and IND until you finish with the sim portion.

I commute from DFW to EWR. Back when I checked the DFW-DCA commute it didn’t look bad.
BOS has flights from DFW on JetBlue, DAL and AA
DCA just AA
SWA does do BWI though.
Incase you’re interested so far I haven’t had an issue with getting to work from DFW. In fact it’s been easy since we picked up 4 out of the 5 direct flights to EWR from DFW this holiday season but we’re going back down to two a day. You have AA/UA to EWR as well as Fedex.
You have also have JFK and LGA in a pinch. I’ve done the Uber and the train from EWR-LGA to get home on SWA before. Spirit also has DFW-LGA. Hit me up when you get here and I’ll talk you through the employee parking here at DFW.
There’s some decent crash pads in EWR as well. If you need info lemme know.

My 2 cents?
Commuting is absolutely awful. There are plenty of other regionals that can offer DFW as a base. I would seriously consider them before choosing a regional that will require you to commute with no end in sight.

As someone from Dallas who moved to base at Republic I agree. If I you can move to your base then you’ll be much happier here. Go to SkyWest if you want to stay in Dallas.

Thank you Wilfortina, Ghawk for you responses. Much appreciated.
Flying dawg I will be sending you a pm once I am out of class.
Fortyeight and Needmorelegroom, I see a lot of people say that on the threads here. I commuted before DAL to STL for almost two years. While it wasn't ideal it wasn't a deal breaker for me. At times stressful, but okay, I guess.
The reason I like republic is cause of the one fleet. If I go to envoy or skywest my fear is that I will have to upgrade into a new model plane with no experience in it and I'm not too comfortable with that.
Also I like the trips better on the 175 side of things. Less legs on avg. I have zero interest in doing 5-6 legs a day. Also I enjoy decent overnights at decent places (not EAS locations).
For the right company I will commute. Republic having bases in DCA and BOS is huge only because I have family there. Overall the pilot group loves it there. I fly with ex skywest and have a handful of envoy guys I keep in touch with and I don't think I will like the work environment there.

Choosing a regional based on the airplane is a very immature, for lack of a better term, way of deciding your future. I’m not calling you immature, just the lack of experience in this sort of decision making. At the end of the day do what you think is best for you. But a career of commuting by choice adds another layer of stress and time away from family that you can’t get back.

Yes having family in base definitely helps. But I would be very cautious about choosing a regional based on the aircraft. An airplane is an airplane. If you don’t want to upgrade to a crj then hold off until you can fly the 170.

I have types in a few corporate jets, so I've had my share of the shiny jet syndrome lol, so definitely not chasing the 170 for those reasons. I have noticed that the 170 pretty much flies mainline legs. Is that not the case? People have told me they fly on avg 3-4 legs at most with a bulk of flying over 1.5 of flying per leg. I have zero interest in flying 5 one hour legs and overnighting in places like Appleton, Wi (no offense to people who live there) to be honest.
I am familiar with commuting. I did it for close to two years. Didn't love it, that's for sure, but I will sacrifice that for amount of legs, overall a good crew, flight time and good company culture.
So to touch on commuting. Besides getting bumped off, leaving on your off day for an early am flight the next day, picking up open time, and possible weather issues for commuting. Anything you have heard or encountered?
If it wasn't for the lack of flying I have been doing the last 6 months I wouldn't even think of leaving my current gig. Just want to fly more and less legs. Ha.
