We've been using a HUD for a few years now at my company and like anything, it takes a little getting used to. Once you learn the new scan and get used to looking "through" the display, it's pretty nice. I totally understand the idea of becoming a HUD cripple, but its not really that debilitating. In fact, going into OAK this past Saturday afternoon, my FO and I were in mock panic - I had both my auto-throttles AND HUD MEL'd inoperative. And somehow, I was able to land a pretty normal visual approach to RW29 without dragging my rear on the seawall at the approach end. Our HUDs also display AOA, which is a pretty nice cross reference to have for all configurations no matter where you have the airspeed bugged.

ABSOLUTE KEY in my opinion - but I'm totally bias.

As far as a HUD now - I also agree that they can end up putting to much information on a HUD.

They are by far the easiest and most accurate way to fly an airplane. The level of precision you can achieve with little effort is incredible.

As far as AOA- that should be required on all PFDs.

I'll go further and say that it ought to be in ALL cockpits - even if not on the PFD. Bolt a huge indicator onto the glareshield if you have too (ala T-34C IIRC)

Somehow implying an AOA gauge would have prevented this? It's all speculation, but if they didn't catch the speed what's the chances they'll glance at an AOA gauge.

Two people above saying it should be required in all cockpits, in a thread about the Asiana 777 crash.

Wrong. The discussion turned to HGS and those typically include AOA.

The AOA display is critical for stall awareness and protection, but wouldn't have played a factor in this crash. I found it very useful and a nice added situational awareness tool.

Yes - because as most threads do, and certainly after 61 pages, threads never change direction in the discussion (especially without any new information being provided).

I think there should be an aural warning if your speed goes 10??? knots below target speed....aural and not just a visual warning.....maybe an aural Caution if you go 15??? kts below target speed also...
