The media are like an echo chamber, repeating the same speculation over and over until they start to hear their own speculation reported by other media outlets, then they take it as fact.

I was watching Captain Les Abend on CNN earlier. He was quite measured and sensible in his comments. Definitely one of the better commentators.

Agree, does he get paid a fee to be on TV ? A SAG card ? Is it OK
to be in two unions at the same time ?

It's pretty obvious that some of the more ridiculous questions and theories are by journalism dropouts.

Unfortunately, there is no means to screen them. Caveat emptor....it's a free site, and the Mods work for free.

The posers always out themselves in due course.

The media is very short on credible sources for this story so at least if they are here they are listening to actual pilots - I think that is a good thing. I'm a psyc prof, not a pilot, and very interested in how behavior fits into whatever happened so I am here to learn as well. I don't have a theory because I don't know enough to have one and I am not a pilot.

Just announced in the Australian Parliament by PM Tony Abbott, RAAF Orion are being diverted to 'spotted objects' in the Southern Ocean search for MH370…More to come

According to ABC 24, Australian Maritime Safety Authority is to hold press briefing at 3.30PM AEDT

The issue that we're at now is that they are getting fidgety and filling in blanks that they are too uneducated to fill or making assumptions that are too early to make.

A fellow DL pilot is quoted on this one, and is lock step in my analysis of it as well. He made no logical jumps or crazy conclusions, just worked with the facts that we know so far to say as much as can be said:

You know the big thing here from a psych point is that we find it hard to accept our lack of control over outcomes, we can easily be slaughtered by forces we can't possibly understand.

The southern arc is the one that makes the most sense of this mess.

If it had crashed in the "northern arc" it would have been more likely that the ELT would have been picked up. I don't know for sure, but I would imagine the southern hemisphere has greatly reduced satellite coverage compared to the northern hemisphere. If it crashed into the sea and sank, that would also have reduced the window for a satellite to pick up the ELT.

I know military guys with a SAG card.

Maybe he gets paid, maybe he just enjoys the notoriety. Either way is fine with me as long as he doesn't spew garbage.

Never heard that union membership is mutually exclusive.

The combined map showing most informations, projections and evidence gathered so far...

MAP: The Possible MH370 Debris Sighting Fits The Former Pilot's Theory Of A Fire Or Smoke In The Cockpit | Business Insider

And the edited plot to put emphasis on the last six pings, from 03:11 all the way to the last ping at 08:11 on its Southern arc section...

The plane as the ping plot showed was on a straight line roughly heading south until it presumably ran out of fuel and crash somewhere within or in the vicinity of the search area in the South Indian Ocean/ the South Sea.
