They probably slammed the power back to idle on short final too. And why not? That's probably how both pilots were landing their light GA aircraft 6 months ago.

I am pretty sure this qualifies as an "Incident", not an "accident".
The CA is a very senior, experienced aviator, the FO is only slightly jr to me. This is not a case of inexperience. I hate to see this happen, and this picture will haunt Mesa PR for eternity. On the bright side, it's only two scratches on the wingtip.

No--not FNGs at all.
Given the low prevailing winds and no significant weather, there are a variety of factors that can't be ruled out--none of us has any data on the mechanical state of the aircraft, the physiological condition of the crew, any human factors issues present, the CVR/FDR/FOQA data, etc..
It is extremely bad karma and extremely unprofessional to pass judgment on fellow pilots, especially when no one even knows what happened yet.
