Quote: Only flew with one FFDO and yes, total tool. During the preflight brief, he informs me that he intends to kill anyone breaching the cockpit door and tells me that he will shoot me if I get in his way. This dude was a check airman. I should have bailed on the flight and called crew support.
What a tool! Instead of killing the threat/unwanted intruder, he should smile and politely ask him to return to his seat. Winning the hearts and minds of each intruder one step at a time.

Now that's a spin. Sorry if you don't like what I say, but I kind of take it personally if a captain tells me that he has no problem putting a bullet in his FO.

I didn't know Tim Martins already upgraded.

One thing for sure, if you announce your intentions before killing someone, you are giving up a very important advantage.

I would've been like, "Oh really? Good luck with whoever comes to replace me, I'm out."

I've flown with three FFDOs...all were rational people. But yeah...if he gave that brief, I would have laughed my way right out of the cockpit.

That's what's sad...the entire program is designed to give a backup to other methods of security (ok...let's be honest...the TSA doesn't count). Unfortunately, there are people who do it who genuinely are concerned about security, and then people like this guy who just want to get a gun and tell people in bars "I'm a Federal Agent. Like James Bond. I mean...if James Bond was an American...I would be him. Except better than him."

Proper response: "Thank you sir, you can count on me not to obstruct your line of fire."

No, not for this douchebag. There's no reason he should say anything other than, "Just a heads up, I'm an FFDO." Just saying that is enough for me to understand what he intends to do if the door is breached and it should be enough for him to assume I'm not getting in his way. But saying all that crap out loud is just compensation for parts he probably lacks.

That is one major problem with the FFDO program. Only half of the crew in many cases is trained.

In FL the mandatory minimum is 10 years of prison for first-offence gun charges. This guy is in serious trouble, I wouldn't worry about him returning to the 121 world.

OK, but look at the big picture, a big part of CRM is making allowances for various personalities. If you want to make a big production out of a little bit of black humor, go ahead, just maybe the next judgement call on a future check ride is not going to be in your favor. That's life.
