Quote: You all realize ATSG is one of the very few maintenance centers in the world that can do the aft bulkhead replacement right? My money is on 1049A coming due for it and instead of sending the plane half way around the world to get it done they just went with ATSG. Might as well keep it all in the family anyway. As for why they'd do it now and not when they carved the plane into a freighter who knows. The fact that half the planes came to us without ADS-B or even GPS and all manner of non-standard cockpits makes me think they just wanted to get them out the door ASAP. Stuff like the bulkhead could wait until its next C-check.
ATSG/AMES received approval for aft bulkhead replacement from Boeing like two yrs ago. After the first replacement it was determined it was not necessary....no more since.

First one was 2012. Time flies!
https://youtu.be/GIn6gK9FJJQ

Most recent was on a Star Air ship, OY-SRP, earlier this year, 2019. They did it in the new hangar. One purpose of the new cool floating overhead crane was to facilitate this exact repair.

Also, I know that N739AX had an aft bulkhead replacement, along with a zillion other repairs, at ILN before being delivered on its dry-lease to Amazon.

It's actually a widely-known and somewhat unique capability that AMES is proud of.

You are correct that a lot of the aircraft to which the AD applies generally won't need it, because unless certain FD is found, the AD doesn't require it before 60,000 cycles, and the LOV on the 767 is 50,000 cycles, after which almost anybody would retire that frame. CAM retired one frame last year at 50K cycles, and N798AX should reach 50,000 cycles shortly, which is why she is flying only as a spare.

Time does fly....thanks for the update. I remembered the numbers were nothing like originally planned...and the first one was not necessary. Cool video though...

It is cool, right? Such a huge hunk of aircraft removed and replaced. The earlier video shows all the work that has to be done from the inside, which is remarkable.

You're right that the original expected number was like 86, plus any ship that exhibited certain damage, but because one has until 60,000 cycles to do it and nobody wants to deal with the different maintenance program necessary to go past the 50,000-cycle LOV, the numbers will not be even a fraction of that.

Quote: Just increased our Amazon flying by 30% along with 4 UPS flights all started in Sep....does that count for anything?
Increase in the flying hours yes, but no additional airframes. To me that doesn’t mean anything. It’s just as good as temporary.

Does require more pilots....more upgrades. We are not getting more airframes... it is what it is. More flying to keep the ones we have no matter how you look at it is a plus. You would rather have heard we are losing a couple airframes to ATI like ATLAS? I will take the increase in flying.

I personally think that ABX is easing its way back into Amazon's good graces. The fact that there is now essentially 8 airframes worth of business there means something. ABX is doing a good job on the high-profile ILN operation. Performance is there. My own fingers are crossed that somehow something happens soon that eliminates for several years any concerns about disruption... These things sometimes happen out of the blue, so we shall see...

ABX was never out of favor with Amazon. Joe Hete, Quint Turner, Rich Carrado et al whipsawed the flying from ABX because they were embarassed by the strike. The “Plantation” in Wilmington OH has its rules.

Quote: I have a CJO and class date for Southern, but wondering what realistic upgrade time might look like? In the presentation they said about 1 1/2 yrs... But is that current news or old? I currently have over 1,000 hrs 121 from another carrier to fill that requirement.

I also have a CJO from another 121 operation that operates DC9's and they have indicated that I would be able to upgrade within a couple months after finishing OE.

Pluses and minuses to both jobs from my vantage point. Trying to figure out which one to take.
DO NOT BELIEVE A WORD ATLAS HR tells you. They know nothing, and they only tell you what you want to hear.
For instance they’ve been saying we’re going to have a contract done soon to new employee prospects for the last 2 years.
Additionally the upgrade time that everyone else spoke of is true and getting longer. Not shorter.

That almost had to be a troll... It takes a special type of stupid to see a press release stating that Amazon is moving 767s to another carrier AND that upgrade times are about to go down.... Any pilot has to know that less airplanes equals less Captains!
