Quote: You'd need the same number of pilots, but you wouldn't have enough captains.

1 x 13-hour transpac: 1 captain, 3 FOs
2 x 6.5-hour transcons: 2 captains, 2 FOs
That math adds up but isn't correct. Think about it. The math comparing Int to domestic isn't that simple.

Quote: Great plan, except the 737-10 can't cross the Atlantic with a full payload.

UAL can defer the XLRs but that also means holding onto the 757s and not replacing.
Interesting..
I would have thought it could do-
GLA
EDI
OPO
LIS
KEF
DUB
SNN
And if we ever start these cities up again-
GTW
BFS

The -10 has the shortest range of all the MAX variants. Sure, on paper, it can do the short ones but it's really been selected as a domestic machine. It's probably all out the window with COVID-19 but in an earlier presentation UAL mentioned bringing "lay-flat" to significantly more domestic city pairs with the MAX.

UAL bought XLRs for a reason, and it was not a desire for additional fleet complexity.

I believe the XLR's and possible the lay flat guppies will eventually replace the 757's doing PS to EWR out of SFO, and LA. PS these days is also in and out of BOS.

Not really.

Monday: ORD-NRT 13:00
Wednesday: NRT-ORD 13:00
Total: 26:00 each for one Captain and THREE F/Os.

Monday: EWR-SFO 6:30
Tuesday: SFO-EWR 6:30
Wednesday: EWR-SFO 6:30
Thursday: SFO-EWR 6:30
Total: 26:00 each for one Captain and ONE F/O.

That is the same amount of flying for Captain schedules, but 52 hours less for F/O schedules.

Augmented transcon turns are a possibility.

Nobody is booking domestic trips now either so we don’t need them on the domestic network at this time and probably through May. Best thing that could be done at this point is a federal mandated quarantine for 3 weeks nationwide. We draw down all flying for this time period and have a date in which we start to wind it back up again. Virus can’t spread if we all quarantine and public confidence can build during the quarantine period. Most import, we don’t continue to spread to the point that hospitals run out of ventilators thus causing a death sentence for the elderly and others who contract and progress to the critical stage. The numbers are stacked against us absent a national quarantine. Tearing the band-aid off would probably be the beat thing for our industry and our nation as a whole.

Quote: I bet they early retire some older 756/767
Except those older 757s are a lot cheaper to operate with 100 people on them than a 777 with 100 people on them. WB planes are great, but only when they are full. If they aren’t full they become very inefficient very quickly. Notice that worldwide airlines are saying they are parking their A-380 fleets? if there was any intention to park 757s they would have been reducing flying and giving 756 SRL, which there weren’t any. The 777 had a plethora of them.

Those old 777s will be the 1st to be parked.

This right here. Will be a difficult undertaking but it is the best way to nip this virus spreading at the bud, and return consumer confidence back to 2019 levels.

We could ground every airplane in the country and a virus or other illness could still spread. People still drive, and more importantly there are people all over the country who could have been exposed at some point. They don’t live in a cave. They have families, friends, go shopping, school, church, etc. This whole deal is a panic and fear driven reaction by the mathematically challenged. The odds of catching this are very small, as are the odds of it being fatal. The company is doing the right thing. Reduce capacity to meet demand until people pull their heads out of their rear ends. They are expecting a severe, but temporary reduction in demand. That’s hardly something that would make a furlough cost effective. Fishing weather is here. Get out and enjoy your time at home.
