Twin 10 month olds and one on the way? Your poor wife. And I’m sure the past year hasn’t done your insides any favors. Glad to hear you’re coming back, and hopefully the instructor thing works out, for your family’s sake.

How do the fly months work? Do you pick them or are they just assigned? What about vacation?

technically only 4 of the 6 are golden, but I never had the other 2 denied.

The 320 sims did not run on Thanksgiving or Xmas. I don’t know about other fleets
I believe they ran over Thanksgiving this past year.

I'm currently on my first fly month since July.

In theory you bid/assigned your yearly flying January ish. In my dept it's four months flying, and I know which months I'm supposed to fly. The theory is two months sim, one month on the line. The reality is not that. PWA requires 120 hours a year.

If you like to teach, it is a fantastic job. It has been great for my family

You bid vacation within your department. It works out quite nicely.

I have heard the 320 has had over 200 apps this last window alone. Three years ago the fleets had a much harder time hiring thanks to the six month captain upgrades. That’s said, I wonder when we return to quick upgrades if the applicant pool will shrink again. 🤔

4 months out of the year...once a quarter scheduled. That being said, I’ve been unrotated from the line on my last 2 fly months

Is "unrotated" and not flying the line requirement what the union was filing a grievance for?

Sort of...

I know several SLI who have been “unrotated”or “retained” in the department for 11 months straight. Just because it’s legal, doesn’t mean it’s a good idea. It’s mathematically possible to go 18 months straight in department.

As an SLI you must rotate for 3 bid periods per year (tied to the vacation year) and get 120 hours of credit. The real question is, what’s credit. (Should be block time, but it’s not) It is tracked very closely now.

IIRC, the grievance is that some instructors didn’t get 120 hours in the year, when flying opportunities existed.

Part of it yes. 120 credit hours on line required....but there is a caveat in section 11 that allows for relief if they can’t cover the sim schedule.

The PWA says credit...block hours is obviously the intent though. Fleets used to harp on block hours but when COVID hit they went back to “well the PWA only says credit”

Interpretation again. Words have meanings, if it says credit, then it says credit. I just find it humorous that these interpretations always seem to be in the company’s favor and justified by need. Language matters because intent is lost over time as people leave positions and policies evolve. Thanks for the information.
