Just counting the number on each regional airlines published seniority list I get 21,200 current regional pilots. How did you come up with only 9,000? Mesa, Skywest and Republic alone are close to 9,000 pilots.

The list(s) are probably not very accurate anyways, at least for SkyWest it’s currently around 5,550, APC says 5,100.

I agree that I was not clear with my post above.

9000 is what the industry estimates as the number of regional pilots that are "hire-able" at the major airlines. There are about 18,000 in total, but each airline has a decent percent that are not current, do not have a medical, or are out on permanent leave. There are the lifers at each regional as well, people that will retire rather than go elsewhere. Then subtract those that can not get hired by majors (too many checkride failures, too bad of a criminal record, etc...) and you are at about 9000 total.

Of those 9000, only about 5000 are captains that are actually flying the line and building time. Those 5000 will likely get hired at a major airline in the next 18 months. The regionals can not operate with these 5000 pilots leaving. These are the captains, check airmen, and instructors.

Some of the regionals will be able to attract what is left from other regionals to keep operating. Look at what AA is doing by giving DECs $150k per year at their WO regionals. If you have 1000 hours at your current airline, and that airline is sinking, AA is hoping that you go to one of their airlines as a captain and fly there for a couple years.

That is over 7000, and doesnt even include Alaska, Spirit, Atlas, Southern, Allegiant, and a few others.

Hi all,

Newbie here. Currently in class in STL and about to hit up EWR as the new base. Couple of questions... A few of you have mentioned Jersey City and Hoboken as awesome places to live. You're right it does look good, and I'm keen to get over there. can anyone recommend apartments in these areas that are furnished ? I'm coming in with no furniture of belongings so would need a furnished place. Unsure how it works so some info would be good. Is there a particular area in Hoboken where a lot of the tech crew reside ? ie complex or location ? It's always good commaraderie if you're hanging around the crews so you can catch up for a brew or a coffee etc. Also, is is difficult to get to EWR on the train from Hoboken Station ? someone mentioned from Penn, you had to catch a bus down to EWR. Can you get a train the whole way through ?

So in short... Names of apartment complexes that look good ? and travel to and from Hoboken to EWR.

Hi. Do you want to rent a room or a whole apartment? If you want to rent your own apartment then Hoboken and JC are out of your price range on an FO salary. Minimum of $1500 pm in Hoboken for 1 bedroom. Furnished is more.

I don't know any regional FO who lives in Hoboken or JC that don't have roommates.

I'm a bit lucky in the sense that I have good resources behind me. Don't want to chuck it all at rent mind you, but $ wise, I'm good. Keen to look at all options for JC or Hoboken. Have class mates keen to bunk with me but also open to a studio for eg. Biggest problem is, no furniture or belongings. I'm having a wee bit of trouble locating places that are furnished.
