Sorry but that's not true.... This is the lowest paid carrier in the region..., all other major carriers (LAN, TAM, GOL) for example, the salary for captains is much higher than that.

I'll expand on my post since I have seen some of your posts on the matter, I'm currently working with a group precisely on the issue of salaries in the region and I have seen the numbers....., I will not post the sources here.

There are gigs in Latin, Central America & the Caribbean where the pay is way low...., but then again, an F/O starting at MESA and an F/O starting at FedEx are in very different pay scales right?

Out of all the major carriers in the region, the most reputable and stable ones, the one with the lowest salary rates is COPA...., the other carriers pay around 10 to 11K to the captains and the F/O's are at about 5 to 6K...., this is based on 13 salary payments per year since in December they pay the "Doble Sueldo" basically for Christmas you get two salaries.

There are three exceptions though:
Cuba: Does this really need an explanation?

Venezuela: Salaries there have remained the same in Bolivares but they have gone down dramatically as their currency and economy has plummeted due to the fact that they have a president that talks to another dead president. Nuff said!

Dominican Republic: This one is harder to explain but basically the DR has been without a national carrier for two decades now, many attempts to restart an airline have failed due to the political influence that the majors in the US obtain (I'll use that term for now) in the country...., although the economy in the DR is stable and growing, there are many political forces that are at play against an airline being set up there; there is one carrier now that started with old DC9's and MD's but they only have 3 Dominican pilots on line now and the pay is way low.

Sorry to say, but the brazilian airlines' paychecks stated above are waaaaaaaay under 11K USD ! Maybe when the BRL/USD exchange rate was 2:1... Right now, a GOL or TAM captain is taking home something around 4,5K USD net (5,74K gross).

And that quite answers why so many brazilian pilots are heading to china and middle east... The cost of living went up and the salaries remained quite the same, thus, the income is buying less and less

By the way, there are quite few brazilians in Copa, but they went there after GOL took over Webjet. What looked like not the best option a few years ago, is shining bright right now for those who made the move, as I heard that the cost of living in Panama is fairly low.

You mean north Americans? As in US citizens? Last time I checked I am also "american" and not a US citizen.
There is no pay scale in Copa. Thats one of many wrong things , why would a junior FO or Capt earn as a senior , the sad part is a Cap. makes around 6500-7000. FO makes 3500 if you are lucky and sell your soul then maybe 4000, but fatigued as never before.

South and Central Americans will usually refer to Americans as "Estadounidenses", which would most closely translate to "Unitedstatesmen". Turns out, they can be just as ethnocentric and petty as we are. We are just not passive aggressive about it like they are.

Nothing more tired than the self-rigtheous sense of ethnic indignation of a South American, who behaves in his own house with the same level of contempt for others who don't look like him as we are accused of collectively up here. Anglos don't know better, but I was born/raised in the Caribbean, so it doesn't fly below my radar. Don't ever let a "sureño" guilt you, they're just as racist, against their own racial shades no less.

The only time you'll see Latin Americans "united" is on Univision with their anti-assimilation pro-illegal immigration agenda and the ensuing manufactured narrative you see on that joke of a channel. In real life, they're as apartheid-prone as they come.

Try telling a European/Asian/Australian, etc. (you get my drift) that you’re American and then present your Mexican or other country-of-origin passport from South America and see them laugh at you!
Because you’re NOT ‘American’ if you’re FROM South America, Mexico, or Canada.

If you’re from South America, then you’re a South American. Now I see ‘chip-on-the-shoulder’ issue with lots of Mexicans and other South Americans who take up the issue and want to be known as ‘Americans’. First, the convention is that we do not normally associate ourselves as belonging to a certain continent. Normally everyone is ‘from somewhere’ as if from a certain ‘country’; like, Sweden, Germany, etc.

I remember debating with my Mexican friend in college who was all up in arms and wanted to be ‘known’ and ‘accepted’ as American when he was actually living in the US as a foreign student. It was a sensitive issue for him. Over the years, I see that same thing with people of Mexican and South American origin. NO, YOU’RE NOT American.

Now, if you pay attention you’d notice that United Sates is a short term we use for United States of America. I won’t go in to a long lecture about historical, geographical, and cultural issues, but the United States are the unified ‘states’ of the then Continent of America that declared independence and became a country which happened to be located in North America. And the citizens, or people of the US, are commonly accepted, all over the world – perhaps not in Mexico or South America – as, well, ‘Americans’.

(Why is it that I have NEVER heard a Canadian tell me that they are ‘Americans’? Why is that only folks from Mexico or South America insist on being labeled as ‘American’?)

What is needed here is a bit of cultural and language perspective, on both sides.

It isn't about South Americans "wanting" to be "American" or what have you. It is about the fact that in many nations in South America, the term "American" simply refers to a person from the continent of both North and South America. Just as we use the term "European" to refer to anyone from any country from that continent. It's as simple as that.

Equally, it isn't about people from the USA trying to proclaim to be THE residents of the American continents. It is simply the term that we use. Since much before the start of US hegemony.

So, relax, people.
