Quote: What does the open skies treaty have to do with labor rates or labor standards? Open Skies means OPEN SKIES for participating countries. Ireland insists NAI is legally based there and Ireland is a participating country. That is their argument.
OK, stop confusing the issue by bringing up a bunch of facts ... It was fine for Pan Am and TWA to operate in Europe, because, after all we fed those people, (Berlin airlift, et all) But now those peons want to leave their mud huts where they crouch in fear of the thunder god and do it to US??? Yeah, not happening until the Germans remove the tooth extraction and limb amputation sections from their ATPL written. Just sayin...
Quote: NAI is the type of operation the Trump Administration looks favorably upon. Don't look for help from the government after 1/20.
Its a bad trade deal, as is the massive abuse we're eating from ME3. 30 flights to our none? Even best case 30 flights to our 3? Please. Trump may not do anything about it, but "H" sure wouldn't have, anymore than the dear Chairman O has.
Quote: And also arguing that NAI is in full compliance with EU and Irish labour laws.
Exactly. If NAI is employing European pilots who accept Dreamliner wage rates at below "standard 787" wages that is their right to do so if they are based in an Open Skies member country. Last time I checked Ireland was a member country and Ireland is actually defending NAI during these negotiations. I doubt Air Europa in Spain (another LCC) pays its 787 pilots at British Airways or Lufthansa widebody rates.
Is there anything in the Open Skies agreement prohibiting US carriers from operating to the ME? Or just not enough US O&D traffic for the Gulf?

Nothing prohibits this, but there is little demand for O&D. I believe United used to operate to DXB fairly recently.

The ME3 do so well mainly due to their geographic location. You couldn't pick a better spot in the world for a large hub for connecting traffic.
Bump for relevancy

Doesn't look like a whole lot of help before 1/20 either.

This is happening in a low news cycle in the dead of night on a Friday.

This is the problem with our government.

2 years from now when our airline industry gets decimated like the cruise industry, they will blame this on Trump for losing our aviation industry, even though the catalyst and fuse on the powder keg was just lit last night.

I hope Trump will do something about this. It sounds like he could be a shining knight to help out the way he just did with Carrier, but on a much larger scale, however establishment republicans and democrats are working on hundreds of ideas like this one to show that the US people were wrong for electing Trump. If you don't think big government on both sides of the aisle are doing everything in their power to stop the phenomenon that Trump started, you haven't been paying attention.

I hope Trump helps us out here and stops these shady companies from circumventing laws so that they can compete without obeying the laws that all the other airlines comply with...

US carriers can fly there. DL said they lost money for 2 years before cancelling Dubai. The ME3 are rearranging how the world's air traffic flows. National game plan. UAL was the last to throw in the ME towel when JBlue's "code share" partner under bid them on a govt contract ( I believe by 1/3rd). No airline has a 1/3 profit margin so uhh, figure it out. They are dumping capacity into the worlds markets at a staggering rate and the US/EU are helping them. They are turning a blind eye to massive subsidies and providing Ex-Im financing to boot. Open skies shouldn't mean a foreign govt can come to the US and take my job. Much less that my govt should help them do it. OFG

Trump would have to do a Carrier type of deal each week for 30 years to save the number of jobs saved with the Obama auto bailout.
