Your trips start early and end late generally. It’s tough on commuters because 4 day trips turn into 6 day trips (required to commute the day before and day after your 4 day trip).
Think about this scenario, in your bid you’re assigned four 4-day trips and one 2-day trip in May (That’s probably min days off, 12 days). That’s 5 trips total and 2 days to commute to and from home each trip, which equals 10 days of commuting to work.
Do you want to spend 28 days each month on the road?

You originally asked why new hires don’t want it. How many new hires do you think just randomly live in Boise or plan to live in Boise just became they’re assigned it? That’s why you received a few answers in regards to the issues with its commute.
Any base you choose is great when you don’t have to commute.

It's great if you live in base. Boise is a great area, especially if you're a young FO (college town).

Following this comment and the answers...what is the best way to find out commuting and flight schedules? I'm new to 121 also, so, I wouldn't have had the foggiest idea ahead of time that Boise doesn't commute well. So wondering where to go to best see flight schedules that would help piece that info together.

It's not that it's a MX base, it's that it's not a Hub.
Outstations feed passengers to the hubs, where they then fly to other locations. To get the passengers to the Hub 8-9AM morning departure bank the outstation needs to leave before 6AM to allow connections.
On the backside the regional feed takes passengers to the outstations from the HUB 8-9PM evening arrival bank and departs after 10PM.
It's not that it's a MX base causing the early departure, late arrival, it's that MX bases are put where relatively lots of airplanes are going to sit overnight. Causation vs Correlation.

Look at where there are multiple carriers flying to from PHX, Take into account fight time and time zone changes for your show time and release time. a three hour flight with a two hour time zone change east bound means you need to leave at least 5.5 hours local time before your domicile show time.
According to Passrider.com DFW has 16 flights a day with 4 airlines. 5 flights between 5am and 8am.
SLC has 11 flights a day with 4 airlines, but only a few during likely show times
LAX has 15 flights a day
SFO has 11
FAT has 3, none of which get you to FAT before noon.
DEN has 18 flights a day.
