By the time you start your training, the process could change, but generally speaking it works like this:
They put out an announcement that they are opening the vacation window.
Everyone places their request for vacation
The computer sorts through and the most senior person gets their first choice of vacation and the most junior gets what is leftover, if anything is left over.
Throughout the year, if someone leaves the company or cancels their vacation, the next person on the waitlist can get that vacation.
Since I’ve been here, I’ve consistently taken 3-4 weeks of vacation each year.

Don’t pick a airline based solely on vacation accrual.... OO vacation system just changed and i hope it changes back. Just the bidding portion of it. And yes everyone would love more accrual... I have my vacation maxed out 186 hours. Thats 46 days (at 4 hrs a day) if i could get awarded that much (can’t) I'm a 20+ year guy... (thats not even factoring in user hours) only saving grace is they cash you out when you leave.. good chuck to help with first year pay at a Major...

The accrual is well below industry but getting the time off is close to impossible. What's happening often is that people take "platinum" days off just so they can ensure the time away. "Platinum" days off are often associated with a perceived nasty cough or head cold, or maybe some bad guacamole. Basically you have to ask months ahead of time (and still denied) and make sure you don't change base, seat, or equipment.
Getting next week's trip off, well, that's not happening either. And if you try and give it away and then call in for a "platinum" day, you will get a call from your CP. Also be very careful using flight benefits too during "platinum" days.

Not sure why this was said, honestly.
What Regional Airline is better? What other Regional do you have free reign to drop trips that you don't want and/or want to take vacation on? What other Regional is vacation not based off seniority?
No wholly owned carrier can drop trips. Endeavor, which put pilots on a 3 month long voluntary "vacation" can't drop trips. So I just wonder why it is you just hate the new vacation bid so much?

I honestly don't know the the situation at any of the other regionals, does anybody?
I just know I tried to give away this weeks trip, and it was denied in less than one second, due to insufficient staffing. The reserve staffing for the rest of the month, in my domicile-seat-equipment, is short over 10 or more pilots every day.
The min staffing provision in our (cough, cough) contract is not being complied with, and there's not one thing that can be done with it.

We would all love to drop/trade trips at the Regional level. But we also know that it just won't happen. Which is also sad to say, but I also don't get how a Regional could ever move away from that model. But also saying that not being able to drop/trade trips is just a OO problem. I only say that because people that don't work for SkyWest or people that may be considering going to OO, versus another Regional, think that they may be able to do that.

I agree with you, Check. I was just commenting to the person that quoted your comment that inferred that "TFAYD".

I understand what you are saying as well. My real point is that getting time off is all but impossible and the company doesn't really care. We have min staffing guidelines that are not being complied with. We hire about 85 a month and lose 65, but when they take on extra flying the math doesn't work and profit is always first.
